We had the good fortune of connecting with Maura Moed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maura, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I think of risk, I think of accountability. It really puts me in the mindset of “If this doesn’t work, it’s on me.” It’s almost like betting on yourself. It forces me to do everything in my power to be a success and not a failure.
When it comes to my career, I surely would not have made it this far without taking risks. I always have had jobs in the past, and it was a big step to decide to only work for myself. I have a beautiful family, and even that was a bit scary to leave that space of “stability” because my livelihood is not just my own. However, knowing how each outcome would affect not only me, but my family – really pushed me to work hard, get my name out there, and market, market, market. I knew I had to get busy, and I put everything on the line.
Luckily, I am surrounded by a great support system and their encourage and assistance in some aspects are what allowed me to focus and keep going. Failure is not an option for me or my business. Plus, I am a firm believer of “You never know unless you try.”
I manage to always come out on top when I bet on myself, and taking risks has given me new perspective on a lot of things. Even in instances where I may not have succeeded how I wanted or thought I would, there’s always a lesson to take away. One of the biggest factors that helped me overcome any fears or nervousness is that I truly believe that I can do anything I set out to do. It’s just a matter of doing the work and not stopping. This is why I can proudly say I am a beauty shop owner. I took a risk, and came out on top!
What should our readers know about your business?
One thing that has set me apart in my industry is definitely my customer service and level of professionalism. I also treat my clients as if they are family. I care about them and we end up connecting on so many different levels to where we go beyond surface layer stuff.
I am really proud of myself when I look at how far I’ve come in my journey. At a former job, I was assaulted. It was that situation that sparked this venture. Being an esthetician is something I always wanted to do, and that is when I knew it was time to take the risk of leaving that job, going to beauty school and getting my own business off the ground. I sacrificed a lot of time away from my family and friends to focus on school, and even after I was done, I had built a nice clientele, but still had to work hard. I had an overnight job for a year to be able to save and keep growing my business, I would see clients all day, and then go do my graveyard shift all night. It was exhausting. But it ended up putting me in the position to open my 1st storefront location, eventually allowing me to resign from that job and focus solely on my business. A lot of people don’t know about that. I am very proud of the hard work I’ve done and I like to use my testament to encourage others and let them know that anything is possible!
It’s not an easy road to take, and there will always be challenges. If you love what you do, and are truly passionate, it is easy to put in the effort to make it happen.
I truly love what I do, and knowing how I have the power to really shift someone’s mood, energy, and even confidence is powerful. I am so grateful to be able to share my blessings and talents with my clients. It is the gratification I receive that lets me know I’m walking in my purpose. Enhancing the beauty of others is my calling, and that is why Enhanced Beauty – Skin, Lashes, Brows was created, and is flourishing!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would definitely have to eat at a few great spots! Healthy, natural and organic is my motto.
Grains Cafe, Cafe Gratitude, Busy B Thai, True Food Kitchen, Public Square Coffee are all staples for me!
However, grabbing a Coconut Buzz from Better Buzz Coffee, or even a cool breakfast or brunch at Snooze would be on the plan as well!
I am not a big drinker, but anyplace with a great Piña Colada deserves a visit for sure!
La Jolla Cove, Sunset Cliffs, Mount Helix and even a hike up Cowles Mountain are my idea of a good environment to hang out and get some good quality time in.
I recently discovered Little Italy, and I’m in love! So much more exploring to do there.
San Diego is full of all sorts of gems and great places. If friends or family visit, the options are endless!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Although my success is growing and thriving, I could not have done this alone.
For one, my family has always been supportive and encouraging. I also have to credit my mentors who saw my drive and passion and poured into me in so many ways.
I simply would not be this far without my partner Keven. And my instructor from beauty school – Lynda Toovey. In regards to my knowledge and skill set in esthetics and lash extensions, that lady taught me everything I know, on top of being a huge inspiration as her story displays her success from taking a risk as well. Another mentor of mine named Jameelah Walker totally has opened my eyes to what hard work can do and achieve for you, and how you’re in control of the level of success you see. These people, and my best friends truly motivate me to continue believing in myself and taking risks! Thanks to them, I know I will not fail!
