We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Orozco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is definitely personal connections and referrals. The best example of is working with the legendary Dave Medusa for almost 20 years.
He gave me insight into the club scene that lead to many other opportunities.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is that I started playing music at 3 yrs old, and I persevered. Despite being born without a right ventricle in my heart and having multiple heart surgeries I have been able to become a successful entrepreneur. I believe that music can change lives and I, myself, I am living proof. Fast forward to high school where our local band was pulling in big crowds. After the band broke up, I continued to recored, and play live as a professional drummer. After that I went back to my acting roots, and on a fluke I became a DJ to make extra money. I was in love with the endless possibilities of this new instrument “DJ” Early on I would DJ seven nights a week and produce music during the day. In the early 2000’s, I was using primitive gear; but was intrigued by the idea of taking other artist’s songs in the same key, and Beats Per Minute, putting them together to make a new song. This genre soon became recognized as MASH-UP. In 1997. I established DJ ROCKSTAR in Chicago, IL. Since then I have had blatant infringement on my brand by more people than I can count. This is all under legal scrutiny at this time. What I want the world to know about me and brand, and story is that music is a special thing that unites people.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
WindN’Sea Beach, Marian Room, PB Fish Shop, Taco Stand, Zoo, Balboa Park, Coronado Island, Hotel Del.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I attribute my success to the following people: God, Dave Medusa, Tony Duffy, Dave Dalton, on a personal level I would like to thank my beautiful wife Alison RN almost NP.. And my awesome neighbor Trudy Campbell for helping me with this. =)
