We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt LeBris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success, both personally and professionally, has been my willingness to lose who I thought I was to gain clarity daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly on my essential self. As a man in today’s society, we’re often taught to toughen up or in more modern terms, “man up.” But, this personally led me to suppress many of the not-so-lucky events that had taken place in my life. By doing so, I’ve found myself becoming detached from my emotions and further distancing myself from who I truly am. Why is this so important to my success? Well, I’m a firm believer that we define success on our own terms. And, if you’re not in tune with who you are, what you value, where you want to be in life, what you want to do with life, and more, you’re going to be aiming at targets that were hand-selected by the “you” society created — not your true you. From my experience, when you hit the targets that the “you” created by society sets, the highs of achieving them wear off rather quickly. It was (and still is) the process of getting crystal clear on who I truly am as an individual that has led me to define success clearly on the terms of my most essential self which has been the most improtant factor behind my success today.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
1B Branding is an NYC-based branding agency hyper-focused on developing strategies to organically reach goals on social through content creation. After previously working with Daymond John of Shark Tank in the same role, we decided to launch this business based on the expertise of content creation on a personal and business brand level. We’re most proud of how we shifted our focus off of ourselves during the start of the pandemic to utilize our resources and network in which we are able to raise over $15k to feed the front-line workers in New York City. Our agency 1B is named after the number of people I would personally like to impact. Using this business as a vehicle to do so is something we are super proud of. The journey to get to where I am today in business was definitely not easy but it was certainly worth it. I’m really grateful that I’ve been able to learn from others’ mistakes via mentorship whether that is from working with a Shark or interviewing some of the world’s most successful individuals on our show, Decoding Success. There were (and still are) many peaks and valleys on this journey, but I think the way I overcome each challenge thrown in front of me is by leaning into them. Instead of backing down or trying to go around them, I just lean in. Lean into the fear. Lean into the unknown. And, then, boom… it gets figured out. There are countless lessons that have been learned along the way, so I’ll focus on the three I feel were most impactful to me. Firstly, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that society will shape you in ways that distance you from who you truly are at your core. I didn’t want to believe that but when I realized it to be true, I knew it was a lesson that many men (and women) needed to learn. Secondly, the next biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way was that the people you surround yourself will dictate how far you actually go. I credit a lot of my success to my network but even beyond that, I also credit the people in my inner circle with keeping me on track when times get turbulent. And, times most definitely get turbulent — especially when you’re in unprecedented times. Lastly, the next lesson I would like to share is something I am still buying into daily. That is… we have everything we need inside of us already. There are some days I believe it and some days I don’t but overall, it’s so true. Every and anything we need from love to motivation to insights and beyond — it’s all inside of us already. We just have to tap in. I would love for the world to know how passionate we are about impacting the lives of 1 billion people through our agency, 1B Branding, and through my personal philanthropic initiatives, podcast, and more. The feeling of impacting a life positively is like a significant other giving me butterflies. It’s unmatched. We all know the feeling. And, that is exactly what we strive for daily.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
You’re asking a foodie to get real foodie on you! Being born and raised in Queens, NY under an Italian/French roof, food was embedded within my DNA. The best place to go for a slice of pizza in New York is L’Industrie in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. That is an absolute must. On top of that, one of the best sit-down dinners you can have is at La Nonna Ristorante in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. For the drinks and to hang, there is no place better than the Skylark in the Garment District of Midtown Manhattan. And, lastly, you can never beat a crystal clear night on top of the Empire State Building where you can see any and everything from the boroughs to the neighboring states.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my mother and father. They’re at the top of my bucket list (or in sexier terms, my “why”) as it would mean the world to me to help them retire, pay off the mortgage on the home, and buy my dad a property out of state. Thank you for doing the best you can to raise, love, and support me through your own turbulent times. I really hope you know how much I truly love you both.
