We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was that I didn’t want to get fired. Growing up in the early 90s, there was a recession that hit Southern California pretty hard and I watched a bunch of my friend’s parents get fired from big companies due to layoffs. It appeared to me at the time that they were getting laid off for no fault of their own. I didn’t want to end up in a situation where I was employed at a big company and going through a round of layoffs where I would get fired just because the economy went down. I felt like that was too risky for me so by starting my own company that meant that I couldn’t get fired.

What should our readers know about your business?
TGG was founded out of necessity. It solved a problem that I desperately needed help on as a business owner! In a small amount of time I fired seven bookkeepers during my previous business that I ran and sold. I couldn’t get good numbers or a bookkeeper who understood accounting and I realized this was a real problem because I wanted to run my business by the numbers. Based on my conversations with friends I had working in Fortune 500 companies and on Wall Street, I knew the right way to run a business was to actually look at the numbers, have objective standards, hold people to them, and be able to plan for the future. After I sold that business in 2005, I knew there was a real need in the marketplace for small businesses to receive accurate numbers and I was determined to find a solution. At the time, an entire fractional, outsourced accounting department didn’t exist. We saw fractional CFOs or bookkeepers in the outsourced market, but nothing that provided a full solution. Today, 15 years later, we have three office locations in San Diego, Irvine and Denver with over 75 employees and growing. Businesses rely on us as either their full accounting department or as a supplement to their current structure. We are a true extension of their team! Our CFO’s, Controllers, Accounting Managers and Staff Accountants support our business owners by providing insightful, proactive and most importantly accurate financials to run their businesses by the numbers.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My neighborhood has always been North County Coastal, so first I would take them to the beach. Next, we would go to Seaside Market for lunch to get a Cardiff Crack sandwich. I would then take them on a hot air balloon ride in North County because I think it’s an underappreciated and cool thing to do in San Diego. We would finish off the day at my favorite sushi restaurant, Samurai in Solana Beach, for dinner.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Dad was a tremendous help in getting me started. He’s a lawyer and if I had to pay for his time, I would have owed him a million dollars a year. I would call him all day long to talk about things and he was a wealth of wisdom when it came to tax, corporate structure, business decision-making, etc. Also, our TGG President and CFO, Andrew Ruff. Andrew and I have been doing this forever. We’re opposite in terms of our personalities, but we complement each other so well. He’s the most loyal, hardworking, and ethical human being I could ever imagine being associated with.
