We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Behnam and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want my legacy to be a reflection of my life’s passion and the values I’ve lived by. As an abstract artist, I hope to leave behind a body of work that serves as a keepsake for my family, friends, loved ones, and art enthusiasts. I want my paintings to stand as a testament to my journey, a legacy of creativity and expression that continues to inspire.

More importantly, I aspire to be remembered as a role model for my daughters. I want them to see my life as an example of keeping their passions alive, believing in themselves, and shielding their inner souls from external negativity. My drive, resilience, and unwavering pursuit of my passion, regardless of others’ opinions, are qualities I hope they embrace.

Having moved to the US from Iran at the age of 11, just before the revolution, I often felt like I didn’t have a place to belong. My art became my sanctuary, the place where I found peace. I want people to remember me for my determination to find my place in the world and for creating art that provides solace and inspiration to others.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is a deeply personal expression of my journey and emotions. As an abstract artist, I use mixed media, primarily acrylics, to create vibrant, textured pieces that evoke a sense of movement and emotion. What sets my work apart is my intuitive approach to painting, allowing the process to guide me rather than following a predetermined plan. I love experimenting with different techniques and materials, which adds a unique, dynamic quality to my art.

I am most proud of the emotional impact my paintings have on viewers and the connections they forge. It excites me to hear that my work resonates with people and brings them joy or reflection. Professionally, my journey has been far from easy. Moving to the US from Iran at a young age, I faced many cultural and personal challenges, often feeling like I didn’t belong. However, these experiences fueled my passion for art, providing an outlet and a sense of belonging.

Overcoming these challenges required resilience and a steadfast belief in my vision. I immersed myself in my work, continually experimenting and pushing my boundaries. The lessons I’ve learned along the way are invaluable: the importance of perseverance, the power of self-belief, and the necessity of tuning out negativity to protect my inner peace.

I want the world to know that my art is not just about aesthetics; it is a representation of my soul and experiences. My brand is built on authenticity, passion, and a relentless pursuit of creative expression. My story is one of finding peace through art and encouraging others to embrace their passions, regardless of the obstacles they face.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my parents, who are no longer with us but remain my driving force and guardian angels. They were my number one cheerleaders, always believing in me and encouraging me to follow my dreams and passions. Their unwavering support and constant reminders to work hard, never give up, and always keep learning have shaped who I am today. They instilled in me the values of perseverance and dedication, and I am forever grateful for their love and guidance. They were the best parents anyone could ask for, and their influence continues to inspire me every day.
