We had the good fortune of connecting with Marlene Kamo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marlene, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
I’ve learned so many valuable lessons and know I have more to learn. The most important so far is how interconnected we all are to each other, the Universe, and Nature. Every day, I get to hold space and be a guide to those who I get to serve. I have learned that I am always going to be a student, no matter how much wisdom I have to offer–I am always learning something new through students and clients about life and myself. Every time I get to work with someone, I feel a familiarity to them, I see myself in them, and them in me; I recognize that at our human essence, we are all the same, no separation. This lesson has been humbling to accept.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am grateful to say that success on my path has shown up with few obstacles to consider. One obstacle is having to make ends meet in an expensive city. I have to be very disciplined about my spending while ensuring I am also saving money for the future I’d like to continue building. Regardless, I have great faith in my path and Divine Source. This type of work can feel very draining but I would not trade it for anything else, I chose this path and it is incredibly fulfilling. My work consists of teaching yoga, facilitating energy healing, hosting spiritual gatherings, oracle card readings, and sound bowl energy healing. In the very near future, I’ll be gratefully adding Ayurveda counseling to that list. First and foremost, I consider myself a student of everything I have to offer, I am merely a vehicle for divine wisdom to pass through me and onto those I get to work with. What I care about most is being a guide for people to recognize their own power and connection to divine source. I am proud of my pure heart and dedication to spiritual service. I am no different than my students and those I get the privilege to service. Through feedback, I’ve learned that what sets me apart from others is being a genuine leader devoted to spiritual evolution. I am eternally grateful to this work and those who trust in my guidance, we evolve and heal by learning from each other.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had to show my friend around the city I’d start by taking them to Plumeria Vegetarian Restaurant in University Heights to catch up over delicious Thai food. From there we’d head back home to Chula Vista and take a walk at Mountain Hawk Park, overlooking the beautiful eastern lake and mountains. The following day I’d be sure to grab some Spoiled Vegans Cafe Breakfast and head over to Coronado to show them around the Island. At some point in the week we have to grab Plant Power Fast Food and head to Sunset Cliffs to eat our delicious food with a breathtaking sunset view. Swimming in the SD beaches is a must, so, I’d have us go further up north to the auspicious Swami’s beach for a nice swim, followed by a visit to Paramahansa Yogananda’s Self Realization Center to explore and meditate in its beautiful gardens. Since we’ll be up in Encinitas, we definitely will have to pay a visit to KC’s Tandoor, my favorite Indian Restaurant. Going to Balboa park is a must, checking out their museums, and going to the Japanese Friendship Garden. I’d also take them to the charming Seaport Village and stop by Kindred for dinner. We’d end the weekend in Barrio Logan at Walk The Block, checking out local vendors like RA Healing’s crystals and of course, more vegan food, so some yummy tacos from Casa de Luz. San Diego has so much to offer.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m grateful to my parents for offering me the space to explore my individuality; so much so that I recognized early on what path I am meant to be on. My mom, Susana Kamo, has always inspired me to pursue my own path, one where I don’t have to depend on others’ “permission” for my success, and instead believe in myself to bring to life what is meant for me. It is through her hardships growing up that she recognized the importance of being a strong and capable woman from a young age and ensured I would carry that with me. I look up to my mom for being so in-tune with herself and her surroundings, I certainly get my strong intuition from her. My dad, Shakker Kamo created a strong material foundation for our family so that my brother and I could truly focus on what we love, and I am so thankful for that privilege.

I have also been blessed with incredible friendships, too many to name, but they know who they are. Having a support system is important and I would not be this empowered, confident young woman if I too, wasn’t surrounded by inspiring, loving people.
