We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Keenan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marissa, what is the most important factor behind your success?
At Sweet Peaks we like to not only talk about hospitality but the experience of ice cream for not only our guests but our staff as well. Ice Cream is naturally joyful but can become exhausting when we don’t take care of ourselves so that we can take care of our guests. Imagine maintaining a smile after you have scooped ice cream for 4 hours on a hot July Day! It is exhausting! So – we encourage our staff to take care of themselves so they can bring the party and this attitude along with the correct tools for everyone to do their job with JOY is what makes the brand successful. This Joy encourages shared ownership not only within our staff but with out guests, too. We make some great ice cream in a fun and creative environment but it is truly the people in the shops that bring the success of the brand!

What should our readers know about your business?
Sweet Peaks Ice Cream is more than just ice cream. It is comprised of the people who work with us from farmer’s to ice cream scoopers past – present and future. We create an experience and it just happens to also taste delicious! Growing a business is a challenge full of wins and fails and everything in between. We are so proud of our people who have helped us grow and made relationships in each community where we are lucky to have a shop.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We have shops in a few Montana towns but my home is in Whitefish, Montana. A perfect day for me in the summer would be one that involves a morning run on the Whitefish Trails System. We have the best system of mountain and urban trails for walking, biking, running and just viewing nature. Afterwards, I would grab a morning coffee at my favorite coffee shop – Wild Coffee – then would spend the day on Whitefish Lake boating or paddle boarding with friends. The day would end at Stumptown Restaurant for some yummy food and wine. (Shameless plugs as I operate both of those businesses as well.)
It it was winter – you can’t go wrong with some turns on Whitefish Mountain Resort followed by a drink at Hellroaring Saloon on the mountain and strolling downtown to enjoy the holiday lights which we keep glowing well into February. If we have more time for a visit then a trip to Glacier Park for hiking in all seasons is a must visit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Montana deserves the credit for inspiring the Sweet Peaks Ice Cream brand. From the natural beauty of the state to the entrepreneurial spirit of the people who live here – the “can do” and “will do” attitude meant that we were surrounded by dreamers and doers in action. It continues to inspire us every day! Additionally – My business partner and co-founder, Sam Dauenhauer is the the biggest risk taker who paints magic with a paint brush and who isn’t satisfied with basic and this is one reason Sweet Peaks sparkles for so many.
