We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariel Kilroy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mariel, what principle do you value most?
Be at least 20% different or don’t waste your time. We think it’s a responsibility of our brand to add to the world and by practicing doing things differently, we feel like we’re accomplishing that. Every time we take on a new task, we try to do it in a way that’s never been done before and we find that this helps us be highly creative and innovative. For example, at Lively Root, we think of our plants as our family and everyone’s heard that before but we give them names, accessories, take them to restaurants and really push that concept.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are so happy to work with plants every day and help inspire more people to love them as much as we do. It has not been easy figuring out how to ship people plants across the country, often in below-freezing temperatures! Plants are sensitive like the rest of us so we have put thousands of hours of effort into making sure they arrive to our customers’ doors safely. We would love for the world to know that we care passionately about creating greener spaces and are incredibly thankful to everyone who shops with us in support of this goal.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many amazing places to eat and explore around San Diego. Little Italy especially with Morning Glory for brunch, the carousel bar, and the speakeasy tiki bar False Idol in the back of craft and commerce. We would go kayaking in La Jolla and grab taco stand after. San Diego is known for their craft brewery scene as well so maybe grab a beer at Ketch, portside pier with a view of the harbor. We would go to Punchbowl for some bowling and karaoke and grab a craft color-changing cocktail at You and Yours. Rent some beach cruisers in Mission Beach and take them to Belmont park, grab a corn dog and ride the ferris wheel. The last two places we would visit are North Park and Convoy st. They have some of the best restaurants! Encontro, Dunedin, Fortunate son and Kura revolving sushi then getting the fish cone ice cream at Somi Somi.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Simone, our Lively Root mascot and plant-fluencer. As plant lovers, we know that our plants have personalities and we had this idea to give our plants feelings and personalities in our marketing efforts. Simone embodies how we are thinking outside the box and staying true to our brand’s uniqueness.
