We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Donley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
For a long time I didn’t realize how important the work life balance was; I would work day after day, living pay check by pay check, barely making it by. Work was my entire life; it consumed me. I would always think to myself “what kind of life is that” ?
Like many others, prior to starting my business and getting into Real Estate I was on a different career path. I was working as an EMT, pulling long overnight shifts and unsure what I really wanted to in life but what I did know is that I couldn’t keep doing what I’m doing now. I needed to take a leap of faith and bet on myself for once because if I didn’t who would? I was already broke and unhappy, I might as well be broke and happy !
In 2021, I started my own clothing business: The Urban Mav
In 2022, I opened my own Real Estate business
& In 2023, I plan to take Entrepreneurship and Real Estate full time
Looking back the biggest shift in balance occurred when I knocked myself off balance. It might sound cliché – but there was no growth in comfortability. If I hadn’t left my old job and taken a risk on myself, I would’ve never got to experience a career change and shift in my work life balance.
Starting my own business allows me the flexible schedule I’ve always wanted and I’m just really happy I decided to bet on myself.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The hardest part of all this was getting started, and it wasn’t the logistical side of getting started that was hard but getting over the mental hurdles and limiting beliefs. I never thought I would be the one to start a business, or sell real estate, so believing I could was hard. It took constantly showing up and putting myself in difficult situations to get to where I am today because if I would have gave up when it got hard, I wouldn’t be where I am now.
I’m a huge believer in any progress is progress, big or small. If you had asked me 5 years ago if I saw myself owning my own businesses I would have said absolutely not! but here I am today doing what I love. It makes you take a step back and think ‘what’ll life be like 5 years from now & what choices do I need to make now to get there’
I currently own a clothing business and my own Real Estate business specializing in North County & Coastal San Diego, brokered by Keller Williams Carmel Valley/Del Mar. In 5 years from now, I hope to own a brick and mortar (or two) for The Urban Mav and become a real estate broker.
I hope to look back on this in 5 years and see that any progress I’ve made from today is still great progress.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are so lucky to live in one of the most beautiful cities in California! In San Diego were spoiled with all the amazing places to check out you’re just a car ride away from it all – city, country, sand, & snow.
A few places I always recommend for great views are Sunset Cliffs, Torrey Pines, Mt. Soledad.
If you’re more of a beach person, check out: Missions Beach, Ocean Beach, and Seaport Village.
San Diego is loaded with great food spots but some of my favorite are: Tacos El Gordo or any restaurant in Little Italy and Gaslamp.
Whether you’re in San Diego for the weekend or a month – there’s so much to do, so many places to see and food to eat, You’re bound to have an amazing time !
who knows, it might even become your new home and if it ever does – I’d love to be the one to help.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh there are so many !! I want to start off by dedicating a shoutout to my super supportive and amazing fiancé Caleb – the best fiancé, the best father, and my best friend. He’s truly the reason I am where I am today.
For books – I’m a huge book lover and a few books I will take any chance to recommend are: Atomic Habits by James Clear, Your First Home by Gary Keller, Find Your People by Jennie Allen, The Millionaire Real Estate Agent by Gary Keller.
Although these may all seem a bit niche, all of these books provided valuable information that I use daily. I have so many more amazing books you have to check out – I’ll be sure to list them on my amazon storefront.
As a Realtor, it’s important to me to stay informed and knowledgeable in all things Real Estate. Whether it be building connections or tuning up skills, my clients can count on me to provide the best service whenever they need.
