Meet Marc Pollock | Co-Creator, Co-Producer, Music Director, and Bassist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marc Pollock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marc, what do you attribute your success to?
Authenticity! Christian Robinson (our “MJ”) can sing the part, dance the part, and look the part. This is very rare in a sea of lip-synching impersonators. Christian is totally genuine, and audiences feel the heart and soul of Michael Jackson as Christian performs. He is the real deal, and undeniably guided by the King of Pop himself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I grew up in the 70’s, surrounded by incredible music and musicians, and a passion to replicate that music. When I play a great song note-for-note, I feel so connected to the person that created it. That feeling of connection is what moves me. In Christian’s case, Christian’s passion began when he watched an 11-year-old Michael perform, and he was immediately struck by his incredible talent. Christian has spent years since that time watching MJ videos, refining his own moves, and practicing to perfect the vocals. He and I are both moved similarly by the connection we feel to the artists that created this fine art. Christian’s years of dedication to his craft blows fans away at every performance. The fact that I get to perform 5 to 10 feet away from him at every show and watch his mind-blowing performance so magnifies the thrill I get performing this incredible portfolio of music.

I know that Christian left L.A. for Florida to find work once Covid hit. When he’s back in L.A. for rehearsals and performances and you two get together, what are some of the local spots you like to hit?
When Christian and I get together, we love to be anywhere there is music playing and artists performing. Concerts in the Park at Warner Center, a local club or bar where there is live music, karaoke to watch people as they refine their craft, and art displays and exhibits are also something we enjoy. Love to see how people express themselves in any form. We also spend hours on social media watching the performances of the many amateur and professional MJ impersonators performing and spreading the MJ love. We are always looking for ways to make This Was It greater. When it comes to food, that is always an issue. Christian is a strict vegan while I am quite the carnivore. We never see eye-to-eye on a lunch place. But we love to eat!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This Was It owes everything to the many people that gave us the roadmap for our endeavor. In addition to King of Pop himself, we owe so much to the many musicians that performed on the original recordings; the musicians that performed in his live performances; Kenny Ortega, who brought us the movie “This Is It” and gave us a window into where Michael wanted his music to go for the concert that never was; Joe Jackson, who had a vision for his family; Barry Gordy, who recognized the talent and helped to groom and expose it…the list is endless.
