We had the good fortune of connecting with Mandy Ungersma and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mandy, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am a born and raised, native San Diegan! I have lived in North County San Diego all my life and I absolutely love working in the wedding industry here. Both of my parents are very crafty and always working with their hands. I think they had a huge influence on me, creating a pathway of entrepreneurship. My mom owns her own Etsy shop selling hand made decor items and my dad makes custom wood decor and furniture. Seeing them both work for themselves and become successful at it, made it an easy decision to go out on my own and do the same.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of my favorite aspects of what I do has to do with COLOR! I love all the different color variations that you can create with. In working with flowers, I have access to hundreds of varieties of color options that make every event different and unique. Standing out among my peers can be challenging, but I find that one of my strengths is to play with color, whether its bright and cheery, dark and moody, or muted and neutral. Any color combo is a fun challenge to take on and I just run with it! I hate to say it, but Instagram has been a huge help in growing my business and getting to where I am professionally today. I have connected with so many couples, vendors, and peers through its platform. Its free and fun to share the progression of my own design and style in flowers. Obliviously, it is not easy to run a business alone, so connecting online with other florists and meeting that community in person, sharing ideas, working together, and taking the stigma of competition out of the equation. I want my brand to be known for working as a team and as a community. Working together is what the wedding industry is all about, bringing all sorts of people with specialties in different areas, to create a fantastic event for a couples “best day ever!” We only bring a small portion of that magic to an event, but the experience for our couples and their guests is a memorable one.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite places in San Diego is Coronado! I visit at least once a month myself. I purchased a bike a few months back, and the bike paths on Coronado are extremely user friendly and can take you around the whole island. My favorite place to eat there is The Henry. The vibes are modern and vintage with indoor and outdoor seating. Another favorite spot is Sea Port Village. I love to window shop and this is one of the best places to do it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have had the biggest impact on my life and where I am today. With their love and support of my dreams both physically and financially, I would not be where I am today.
