We had the good fortune of connecting with Mandie Bullock and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mandie, what do you attribute your success to?
Personal connection. I am passionate about what I do, and my clients feel that. They are often nervous about meeting a strange attorney to talk about unpleasant, personal subjects. I pride myself on putting them at ease and making the process simple and painless. I always ask my married clients how they met. Hearing their story is my favorite part of our meeting. I feel them relax when I explain why I do what I do. After they hear about my personal experiences, they understand why I want to help families like them avoid the stress and heartache I have been through. They understand why it is important and why I do it. It sounds corny, but I like to think I make estate planning fun, or at least pleasant. The cornerstone of my company’s success is my personal connection with clients. I could be the smartest attorney in the world, but if I can’t connect with people, that knowledge is useless. As Theodore Roosevelt said, “Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am an estate planning attorney and after working at a firm, I decided to go out on my own and do it differently. I provide a comprehensive Kids Protection Plan to make sure my clients’ children are raised by who they want and how they want, and never taken into protective custody. I make sure their estate plan is always up to date to reflect their current life and the current laws so that it works when it needs to. Keeping their loved ones out of court and out of conflict is my passion. I also help my clients pass on more than their money–I capture their insights, wisdom, stories and advice as well. I do this because the most precious thing I have from my mom is a voicemail she left me years ago. I want my clients to have something similar, so I include a Family Legacy Interview with all of my estate plans. The biggest challenge we faced in starting the business was taking the leap for my husband, Ryan, to leave his comfortable, salaried job of 15 years (with benefits), to put all of our efforts into the new business. It was a big risk! Those first few months were stressful, but pretty soon we knew we had made the right decision. The best thing about our family business is having the flexibility to allocate adequate time to our priorities. We have achieved a beautiful work-life balance.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question! Here are my favorites:
Sunbathe, swim and people watch in Pacific Beach, preferably Law Street.
Walk through La Jolla, making stops at the cove and Seal Beach
Catch a Padres game and enjoy a craft beer and sushi at the beautiful Petco Park
Have a burger at the legendary dive, Rocky’s, in Crown Point (Pacific Beach)
Ride a beach cruiser all the way around Mission Bay
Hike down to Black’s beach from the glider port
Get fish tacos from…anywhere!
Drive over the Coronado bridge, tour the Hotel Del Coronado (the Del), have chips, salsa and a cocktail on the deck

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my husband, Ryan. He has been absolutely instrumental in the success of our business and the happiness of our family. His unwavering support, love and advice have allowed me to grow exponentially. I would also like to thank my business coach, Ariel, for her advice and support, and my dad for all of his love and encouragement throughout my life.
