We had the good fortune of connecting with Mandi Pratt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mandi, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As pet parents we love our companions so much and are very attached to them since they love us unconditionally and are such loyal friends and comedic relief. We want a way to hold them forever and remember them far into the future. Pet portraits are a great solution to be able to enjoy a very loved companion for decades to come. I believe pets are therapy and art is healing, so it’s a true joy to craft a handmade, artful solution to help pet parents remember a special companion pet. Dog moms and kitty dads usually email me a few photos to choose from and then I get started on creating a pet etching for them. Each photo is fine-tuned a bit and then etched to a metal plate. The plate is carefully inked and paired with Italian fine art paper to be pressed though my Grammy’s printing press. Most snapshots/phoneshots aren’t usually wall-worthy but by using the traditional techniques from the art of printmaking with metal plates and a printing press, a favorite pet companion is honored in a handcrafted elegant piece of art that will compliment any decor. Most people describe their etchings as having a vintage and ethereal feel to them. They are always huge hits as gifts or a treat for oneself to remember a special moment with their buddy or just to enjoy that favorite fuzzy face everyday. You can see the cute dog and kitty faces on the website at GreyboyPetPortraits.com or take a peek on Facebook or Instagram @GreyboyPetPrints.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Most pet portrait artists use the popular methods of art, such as watercolor or drawing, but I like the printmaking process as it gives that very loved face some depth and warmth and takes just a regular snapshot to a magical level. I’ve experimented with adding a paw print paw print and dog tag or lock of fur next to the art, which seems to be a big hit. It’s special to meet each client and hear all about their very loved companion.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We love taking our own dog to the dog beach at Huntington Beach and then stopping at The Secret Spot for lunch. If we are by ourselves, it’s fun to hike in Chino Hills State Park and eat at Lettuce Toss It. Laguna Beach is a must see with or without pets! There is hiking at Crystal Cove State Park and plenty of shopping at the Mission Viejo Mall. My favorite place to eat in that area is the Original Pancake House in Aliso Viejo. Come hungry and you won’t be disappointed!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Grammy, also an artist, is the one who encouraged me to help pet parents have a very special piece of artwork, by using her printing press. I very much appreciate her and her encouragement to use artwork as a way to help pet parents!
