Meet Lukas Fuster | Artist and Digital Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lukas Fuster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lukas, why did you pursue a creative career?
If there is anything I have learned within the 19 years of my life thus far, it is the idea that happiness and success cannot be forced. Being a creatively driven individual all of my life, I continue to find evidence that it is these creative outlets that bring pure joy and excitement. I have always known that my future would be largely related to my artistic passions, almost to a degree in which I truly could not see myself doing anything else. Whether it be drawing, designing logos, customizing shoes, or even trying my hand at fashion and modeling, I am constantly doing what I love, regardless of whether it is a personal project or a paid job. With regards to my career and future in a creative career specifically, I have had quite a difficult time pin-pointing exactly what it is I would like to do. I really do love anything and everything under the umbrella of the arts, and I just cannot seem to dedicate my entire life to one thing. In all truth however, I really do not mind this uncertainty and openness to the creative world. As of this current moment, I am very excited to be building upon my hobbies and artistic direction through my college courses—and I am beyond excited to continue building my social media sites and sharing my passions with the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When it comes to my art, I have this “thing” where I grow highly interested in one concept/idea, and then I begin working on it until I am quite literally bored of it. I have always been creatively drawn to all art forms including fashion, design, illustration, painting, film, and architecture. Growing up, I was interested predominantly in traditional drawing and painting. Whether it be a landscape with a faulty vanishing point or a portrait drawing with unbelievably inaccurate proportions, my beginnings as an artist were greatly encouraged by those around me. While I continued to build upon my half-decent skills as a traditional artist, I also found myself venturing out into the world of photography and videography, which then expanded to an interest in fashion, design, and even makeup. Currently I am really enjoying lifestyle and fashion photography, but who knows what I will be interested in a year from now, a month from now, or even tomorrow! I guess one could call my numerous passions a form of indecisiveness (which I have heard a good number of times), but I call it art. I can, with confidence, say that I will never be satisfied doing just one thing for the rest of my life. A lifetime of holding a paint brush day in and day out seems unimaginable. Shooting and editing photos/videos for the next 50 years? Absolutely not! To those that focus on one craft and perfect it in this lifetime, I applaud and commend you greatly. That is art in it of itself, an art that I, however, am not fit for. As I have developed and grown to appreciate my love for all things art, I have come to the conclusion that it is OK to be a jack of all trades, a master of none (or perhaps…everything??). This allows for opportunities, joy, and excitement to be discovered everywhere, and there really is no limit as to how many passions one can have. My art, in truth, is a manifestation of inspirations, originality, and personal expressiveness that have allowed me to feel comfortable and confident in my passions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego is absolutely beautiful, and it really does have something for everybody. Whether it be the food, museums and attractions, or the SoCal beach life and beautiful weather in general, you really can’t have a bad day here! In all honesty I cannot pick a favorite when it comes to San Diego’s locations, but Encinitas and La Jolla are definitely up there for me. There is a certain charm that you instantly sense when in Encinitas—a perfectly sized beach town with quaint store fronts and restaurants spotted all throughout the city. As an avid coffee lover, there are a number of delicious coffee shops that I have grown quite addicted to. Pannikin Coffee and Tea, Lofty Coffee, and Better Buzz are some of my favorites, but I’m sure there are many others that I have yet to discover! The variety of food in Encinitas is phenomenal as well, you really cannot go wrong with the cuisine and food options that can be found here. If I were to plan a perfect day in Encinitas, it would involve coffee (duh), walking around town, thrifting, eating some delicious food, and then ending the day with a massive scoop of ice cream. Sounds pretty nice, right? La Jolla is not that far off from Encinitas, however it does feel a bit more posh. I love coming to La Jolla for that wealthy beach town vibe, but again it is not vastly different from Encinitas. There is a gorgeous Westfield mall that has been newly renovated on La Jolla Village Drive, and this is my all time favorite place to get some shopping completed! My all time favorite restaurant, Din Tai Fung, is located in this mall as well, so if there is one restaurant in all of San Diego I would force you to go to, it would be this one. Living in SD my entire life, I have been to pretty much every part of this gorgeous city. Little Italy, Balboa Park, and Del Mar are a couple more of my favorite locations, I really could go on and on about my love for San Diego but I hope I was able to give you a few new places to consider visiting!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
What a question this is! I have to say, I believe that there has been an incalculable number of inspirations that have presented themselves to me in my life time. I can say with certainty, however, that social media and the digital world have opened up so many opportunities for me and my creative journey. I believe that we have certainly shifted to the digital world, and this has allowed for millions of individuals to make a living through social media alone. Many years back, this idea of achieving “success” through, say, an Instagram account, would have been quite questionable. There was this notion that success was tied solely to a 9-5 job, and that social media was meant for entertainment purposes only. I was born around the time where social media slowly grew in popularity, but it still was nothing in comparison to today. Thus, I too grew up thinking that my hobbies were not valid or could not lead to success, and that I would have to find a “real job” at some point. It is through my introduction to the digital world about 8 years ago that has allowed me to realize the potential of my so called “hobbies,” and subsequently I continued to work on my passions ever since then. Through one of my Instagram accounts (@lukasfuster), I have had the opportunity to create album covers, logos, personal commissions, and have even worked with major companies to create promotional content. Never in a million years did I think that my artistic passions and hobbies could lead to these opportunities, but having been introduced to social media (not to mention major support from my incredible family and friends) has enabled these opportunities to come to life.
