We had the good fortune of connecting with Lori Mahoney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lori, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After a couple years of making random cakes here and there it became an obsession, I was looking for reasons to make them. It slowly became a small side business doing cakes for friends and then friends of friends. It was all I thought about really and before I could blink it became a full time job that was taking over. I would come home from my day job and start working on cakes it was all I really wanted to do. I thought maybe I can just do cakes – wouldn’t that just be crazy? I discussed it with my partner in life Matt and with his encouragement and support I decided to go all in. I quit my day job and was determined to make it as a cake designer and I almost still can’t believe it but… here I am.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I absolutely love what I do. I think that is an advantage that a lot of people do not have with their careers. It is never easy running a business solo but a lesson I have learned is that I have to take time for myself, my family and my friends. It is easy to get lost in your work and log in too many hours without a break. I think the best thing to learn from my personal story is it is never too late to give your dreams a try and see where you go. I have no regret other than I wish I had started a long time ago.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in San Diego it is easy to always find a new place to take friends and family when they visit. One of my favorite places to take friends to eat is World Famous in Pacific Beach. You cannot beat their Lobster Eggs Benedict it is a staple every time we have friends in town. We often take a trip to the beach ( any beach really) we like to drive up the Coast and stop at anything that looks inviting. That is the beauty of California there are so many options. Balboa Park is always a good spot as the events are always changing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My partner Matthew Sager. I could not have done any of this without his support, love and encouragement. He is my biggest fan and my toughest critic which keeps me on my toes. Honestly, he keeps me going with his support. I cannot imagine even trying to make this business run without him by my side.
