We had the good fortune of connecting with Lori Addis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lori, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I believe the greatest gift an artist can give to the world is to honor and believe in themselves. When they do, their magic and visions unfold.
I live out a creative career everyday as an abstract artist, freelance designer and musician. For me it’s a soul exploration and heartfelt act of honoring the gifts within and letting them flow through. I love to create because I love the flow state. Much of my process and work is intuitively based – using art or music as a medium to capture the creative source in elemental form. My artwork utilizes watercolors which uniquely capture subtle nuances of every touch I make to the paper- recording every motion. My music too, is based off a spontaneous stream-of-consciousness flow. I like capturing raw inspiration in its most elemental form.
I’m also a deep believer in pursuing a path of self-discovery and realization. I want to see what I’m made of, what I can do, what I can grow into and meet my potential. When I devote myself to my visions, it’s a deep sense being aligned- of valuing myself and letting divine inspiration come through.
I went to Tyler School of Art for 3D Design & Installation Sculpture and worked independently as a freelance designer since 2006 creating experiential environments. Painting emerged in my life as I felt the soul-necessity to give priority to creations that expressed my own values and visions. I never stopped playing piano since I was 6, and I’m currently releasing music as Goldwaves.
Aside from labels or categories, I’ve always wanted to be what I called a ‘life poet’ – weaving together a beautiful existence of fully living into my inspirations.
Please tell us more about your work. What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
I’ve learned how important it is to stay clear and aligned to one’s own path. Breathwork helps me to reconnect to my intuition, essence and joy. Carving out time to follow inspirations, time alone and in nature are so essential too.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them exploring at Sunset Cliffs, climbing down to the cove or stairs to get closer to the water. I love San Diego for the amount of water to explore, so we’d take a boat out of Mission Bay- stepping away from the world of humans and into a water world is so special. Favorite restaurants to visit are Costa Brava, Trilogy Sanctuary & Cafe Europa. Orfila Vineyards in Escondido is a favorite too, for the wine and views.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my husband who is always supportive and patient-especially when my projects seem to take over the whole house, ha! My 3rd grade art teacher, she helped me feel recognized in my talents, made me feel seen and valued. Thanks to my parents, who supported me in piano lessons for so many years and made going to art school a reality. And the book ‘The Artists Way’ is a gem.
