We had the good fortune of connecting with Lita Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lita, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I get bit or stung by an insect, I get allergic reactions and then have to be on Benadryl 24 hours/day. I was unsuccessful in finding an insect repellent (with or without DEET) that worked and was introduced to try essential oils. After a lot of trial and error (on me), I developed 2 insect repellents that are effective and made with essential oils. I shared it with friends and other travelers and they urged me to make this available on the market. My business was born!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my business after I retired from public service with the County of San Diego. During my 35 years with the County, I tried many careers and settled with Civil Engineering. I am also active with art and photography. I had many careers with the County of San Diego, from entry level to mid-management, which was invaluable in understanding how a business works and the importance of good customer service. After retiring, I then worked for a consultant which taught me the importance of having low overhead, making a profit and controlling losses. The technical side of civil engineering helped me with developing and testing various blends of essential oils for effectiveness. The artistic side of art and photography helped me work with graphic artists in developing my trademark and product labels. The key to everything is being open minded, willingness to learn from others, and learn from good and bad experiences. If something unfortunate happens, identify the cause and prevent from occurring in the future. This is how we grow.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego County has so much to offer. It has an ocean shoreline, lakes, foothills, mountains and desert. Yes, you can see all of this in one day! If I was showing a friend the sights over a week’s time, I would recommend to come in the Fall or Spring when the weather is mild throughout the County. Spring is best because the hills are green from the mild rains we get over the Winter. My favorite sights to see are: Shoreline: Torrey Pines Hang Gliding Port, La Jolla Cove and Shores, Children’s Cove, La Jolla Cave (look at the ocean from inside a cave you can walk into), and Mount Soledad. Foothills: Mount Helix. Lakes: Lake Murray, Lake Henshaw, Lake Poway and more! Mountains: Mount Laguna and Mount Palomar Desert: Borrego Springs

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give credit to my husband for all of his support and assistance in making this business grow.
