Meet Lindsay Renteria | Personal Trainer & Crossfit Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Renteria and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In 2012 I graduated college with a B.S. in Kinesiology and started coaching CrossFit full time. I coached upwards of 24 classes or more a week, while balancing my own training. It was a tremendous amount of time in the gym and in front of large groups of people. In 2015 I burned out and took a break from teaching for a while, to understand what I really wanted out of life. After much thought, I realized that I wanted to continue to pursue fitness, but more 1-1 style where I could truly help people move better and live their strongest, happiest lives. As a Personal Trainer, I had much more flexibility and control over my own schedule. My goal was to learn and get some experience under my belt at 24 Hour Fitness so I could eventually take my business into my own hands outside of the company. I found that working less allowed me to have a much better quality of life. I was able to train people the way I wanted, could travel more and not feel bad about it, and try new activities often. When the pandemic hit in March of 2020 I took my full personal training business outside 24 Hour Fitness. The world’s situation gave me that big push to really give it a go! I was now 100 percent in charge. It was absolutely terrifying at first to be on my own, but I knew I needed to get outside my comfort zone and go for it.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I can train people anywhere: online, in person, at a park, or in the comfort of their home. I am most excited about that. I love changing up my work environments. It’s challenging and I enjoy it. I am proud of all the goals I have helped my clients achieve and the lives I have helped change over the past 10 years teaching Crossfit and Personal Training.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I specialize in gymnastics and calisthenics style training. I have clients ages 9-70 years old doing pull ups, cartwheels, handstands and other full body elements they never thought they could do! I like to keep training fun and constantly varied.
I have learned many lessons over the course of my fitness career. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that people just want to know that you care. In the beginning, I was so focused on the end goal and wanted them to change their lifestyles quickly, but health and fitness is a journey not a sprint. People can become easily frustrated if they are not getting quick results, but teaching them to trust and enjoy the process has been key. They need encouragement just like I do. Education has been huge too. I set expectations from the start and I give them the why behind the what. If they use the tools and are consistent thats when change occurs and progress happens.
I also believe that connection is key. Being able to understand, be present, and just listen to people has really helped me expand my business.
I want people to know that no matter what age you are, you can start your fitness journey anytime. Whether you want to learn a new skill, run a race etc. it’s all possible. My brand specifically is about moving better, becoming stronger, and having fun while you’re training! I always reinforce that you must enjoy what you’re doing to stick with it for the long term.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Pacific Beach board walk! This is one of the most exciting and interesting spots in San Diego. The day would begin with a morning walk/bike ride around the bay and beach. We would have lunch at Amplified in PB. They have delicious healthy bowls and a beautiful view. We would grab drinks at Tower 21 after. This is a more fancy place, but it has a nice vibe. The day would finish watching the sunset at Windnsea beach in Bird Rock La Jolla.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to my friends Laura Novack and Nicole Zapoli who are both fantastic Personal Trainers. They have been wonderful role models over the years and have inspired me to start my own business. Dr. Theresa Larson is an amazing mother and entrepreneur who has been a wonderful mentor and support system as well.
