We had the good fortune of connecting with Liese Victoria and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liese, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think about risk more as a challenge to push myself to try something that is not necessarily the safest choice but might be worth the experience and end results. Instead of avoiding risks, I take them to be bold and daring in my life choices. Being a risk taker is how I got to where I am today. I have taken many risks throughout my personal and professional life, all of which have molded and shaped who I became. Even the risks I took that did not pan out so well, helped me develop in life and build my career.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In my early 30’s, I realized I was not where I wanted to be in my professional life so I took a risk by going back to school in hopes I could change careers. I had to start all over again, it took 6 years to complete my studies and earn a masters. During this time, I sacrificed a lot including my social life and taking on many unpaid internships. I focused on completing my degrees and gaining industry experience. All of this led to changing what I wanted to do. I have had so many amazing opportunities to explore different facets of the fashion industry which eventually gave way to my desire to teach. After completing my bachelors in 2017, I was hired at San Diego Mesa College. I have since developed and taught multiple fashion merchandising courses e-commerce, history and trends, internet marketing, and event planning and production. I love what I do and that I get to teach others to do what they love. There have been lots of challenges and hard lessons to learn along the way but I was able to overcome them by pursuing my dreams to the fullest and never losing sight of my goals.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting San Diego, I would be delighted to show them the greatest time ever. Highlights of their visit would be starting each day by having artisanal coffee and fresh pastries at a lovely local cafe such as Copa Vida by the Ball Park. We would go for bike rides along the waterfront to Liberty Station where we could sample tasty drinks and bites at the Public Market. We would sightsee around Shelter and Harbor Island to take in the glorious views of downtown and the marina. We’d spend time walking around the botanical gardens and visiting museums at Balboa Park. There would be memorable dinners at Mister A’s for the exquisite view from their rooftop dining. You haven’t experienced paradise until you’ve spent your days exploring the many beaches along the San Diego coastline. There would be days enjoying stand up paddleboarding at Mission Bay, relaxing on the sand in Pacific Beach, and taking yoga classes on Sunset Cliffs. If I only had one week, I would want to show my friend all that San Diego has to offer through a variety of fun activities, beautiful sceneries, and dining on some of the best food in SoCal which are all the things that made me fall in love with this place!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have been encouraged and supported by many wonderful people along the way. Professionally by my mentor, Meegan Feori, who became a friend and eventually a colleague. She guided me in finding my calling as a fashion instructor and helped me get a foot in the door at San Diego Mesa College, where I currently teach fashion merchandising courses. I also had some of the most amazing professors, including Susan Lazear, who gave me opportunities that helped develop my teaching career.
