Meet Lewis Torres | Kickboxing & Dance instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lewis Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lewis, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I believe maintaining balance is crucial in all aspects of life. Whether I’m coaching kickboxing or instructing dance, I’ve learned not to overstrain myself physically, allowing me to cherish special moments with my family. With a three-year-old daughter, staying active is vital for bonding with her. Additionally, maintaining a fulfilling relationship requires balance, prioritizing date nights and quality time with my beautiful lady.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Im currently in South Carolina at the headquarters for 9round, for an amazing opportunity for Video and Photography marketing for the company as well as training with 9 other of the best 9round trainers around US and Canada.
On July 8, 2014, my life took an unexpected turn when I suffered a brain aneurysm. Thanks to a successful surgery, I embarked on a journey of recovery that included months of physical and speech therapy, during which I found myself in a wheelchair. Despite the challenges, fueled by my inherent passion for dance cultivated since the age of 5, I was determined to relearn everything from scratch. This determination propelled me to compete and perform on prestigious platforms such as the television show NBC World of Dance and various dance competitions nationwide.
My introduction to the fitness and kickboxing realm came through my wonderful partner, Ally. Transitioning from dance to kickboxing wasn’t too challenging given the similarities in rhythm and timing. Although my doctors advised against competing in kickboxing bouts due to my prior health issue, which was a bitter sweet moment. But, I found immense fulfillment in training our members and fostering a safe environment for them to pursue their fitness goals every day.
Whether it’s kickboxing or dance instructing, the main thing is enjoying the moment. Have fun with it and try your very best.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In my opinion, there’s no place quite like San Diego. The combination of good company and the sandy beaches creates an unbeatable atmosphere.
Some of my favorite spots would be Corbin’s BBQ, Stella Jeans Ice Cream, and Hoboken Pizza on garnet st. where we had our first date.
An exciting place I’d recommend is 9round Kickboxing on friars rd where I train. It’s a welcoming atmosphere and the greatest 30 minute workout you’ll find anywhere.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t feel right without first acknowledging the incredible impact Ally, the love of my life, has had on my journey into the kickboxing and fitness world. Not only is she the mother of our precious daughter, Ella Rae, but she continually inspires and challenges me to grow as a man and as a person every single day.
Another profound influence in my life is the artist Russ. Discovering his music at the age of 17, along with delving into literature by Deepak Chopra, Sadguru, and Napoleon Hill, sparked a journey of self-awareness regarding my talents and gifts. These experiences taught me that our reality originates within our minds, emphasizing the importance of being open and aware of our inner world.
