We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Grodin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from Las Vegas, NV. I moved around a lot as a kid, going to 9 schools in 12 years in 3 different states on two different sides of the country. Yes, that is true and no my dad wasn’t in the military. I look back on all of that change and feel as if it prepared me for what was ahead in life. They say the only thing constant is change right? I was able to adjust to college easily, unlike some of my friends who had never left their childhood home before then. I enjoy meeting people and making friends. I do find that moving around like that made it harder to former deeper connections with people. That is definitely different now that I am older. I have wonderful long standing friendships and such a wonderful network of human beings in my life. I think some of that journey is what led me to wanting to interview people and share their story. Comments people make about how outgoing I am etc., but they don’t know my story. They don’t know that I am really an introvert, assessing the situation and assessing my emotional risk prior to “diving in”.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always been in sales, that is how I pay my bills. I Want To Know Your Story came about because in my travels for business I meet/see alot of people. I don’t know them, or their stories, and I know the last thing I want to do is judge them. I started asking people about themselves. A simple smile or a “hello, how is your day” goes along way and is sometimes just what someone was missing in their day. I started doing interviews with people two years ago and share them on my YouTube Channel. The goal is to build a world with less judgement and more empathy, one story at a time. The truth is we don’t know unless we ask….so I ask!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would plan a hike with great views, maybe lunch at a spot with good food and a nice view of the ocean and a good glass of wine! Some evenings would be filled with concerts or comedy shows. I really like stand up comedy!
I enjoy restaurants, locally owned, going to the movies, theater, concerts and comedy shows. I also love to play golf, so there are some great courses we could check out if they are a golfer! Also, Sporting Events – Basketball and Foootball….GAME ON!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story has been shaped by so many. My mother has always been my rock, through all of the ups and downs. My father has a role in who I am now and am grateful for the relationship we have in my adult life. I have some incredible friends who I can call and know that they will answer.
