We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Menzel-Odell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, do you have a budget? how do you think about personal finances?
Yes, we have a household budget. We keep a few versions of our budget. Our current burn rate is pretty high, but so is our current income. We keep a version of the budget that shows everything that can be cut if we were to lose a stream of income. The luxuries would be the first thing to go if we were to lose/lower our income. Things we consider luxuries: house cleaner, meal prep service, laundry service, grocery delivery, food delivery, flying first class, actual luxury goods, etc. As far as spending goes, we save first then we spend. Anything over $1,000 we normally discuss. I like to be able to afford something three times over before I purchase it, if not it feels like too much of a stretch.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I established My Pink Hanger in 2012 alongside my mom, launching it as a predominantly online boutique, offering trunk shows, styling services, and resale. Over time, our focus shifted, and we became increasingly active in resale online, across platforms such as eBay, Poshmark, and Whatnot.

Fast forward to today, and My Pink Hanger has undergone a transformative shift. Inspired by my belief that everyone deserves to feel confident and empowered by their wardrobe, I’ve pivoted towards offering personalized closet cleanout services. From auditing existing closets to curating cohesive and functional wardrobes, my mission is to help individuals rediscover joy and confidence in their clothing.

I’m most excited about empowering and educating women to help them live their best lives. Whether it’s through frugal style tips, reselling insights, or simply sharing my own story I aspire to build a community that uplifts and supports one another.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
North County:
If you’re into donuts & thrifting I always recommend VG Donuts and Rancho Coastal Humane Society Thrift Store. Best donuts & thirfting in San Diego!

Ocean Beach:
I also love taking friends from out of town to OB Noodle House and then jewelry shopping at Ocean Beach Antique Mall. Jewelry counter is all the way in the back, Ken the owner is the BEST! He pays your tax if you pay cash:)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Mom & my husband have had the most influence and deserve a lot of credit for my successes. Suze Orman The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke is one I read in college and really got me headed on the right financial path. Gary Vaynerchuk’s podcast has helped me a lot in business. & motivation.
