We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Hong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Really from the beginning, my thought was to build something that was not just my own. I started as a graphic designer doing freelance work, but I always knew that was just a stepping stone. I knew design was just one part of the orchestra and you need a variety of top-notch skill sets to really make that orchestra shine. I used that as a portfolio to build from and find our target market. Along the way, I added team members and outsourced all the various pieces to people who could deliver high-quality work. From the start, my thought process has been that it’s really about building exceptional products, exceptional service and an exceptional team. I recognize I can’t do that on my own. It’s a “we” philosophy. As a team, we own this business together.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What makes us different is a people-first mentality, whether it’s internally with our team or externally with how we work with people. It’s about setting expectations with our clients and delivering high-quality products. We strive to communicate thoroughly and are constantly learning. It’s that value base that led to our last Net Promoter Score of 73. We also serve a very specific niche, the financial services arena. Looking back, it’s amazing to say that we’re veterans in this industry and we’ve been able to watch our clients grow toward their unique goals. We’ve seen clients go from an idea to over 20 employees in two years. Another company grew from about 25 employees to over 100 in three years. Getting to be a part of that growth is energizing for us. We love stepping alongside companies that are on the cusp of dynamic change and supporting them through it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first place that came to mind is the Carlsbad Flower Festival. They would have to come in the spring, but that’s just a magical place. We would also want to tour the coastline, such as Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Bird Rock to be by the water. If there’s time, we may want to check out Balboa Park. We would head to George’s of the Cove and grab some drinks and appetizers on the top deck. Of course, Sunset Cliffs is an ideal way to end the day. Whatever we do, it’s just about being outside and soaking up all the city has to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would give a huge shoutout to my husband. He’s been a rock for me. He’s believed in me when I didn’t think I could stretch myself quite that far and he’s just always supported me along the way. A big part of where I’ve gotten personally and professionally is thanks to his support. And I need to give some credit to my parents, who are both creatives. My mom is an artist and my father is a journalist. Both of them have always followed their passion and appreciated quality work, which has inspired me.
