Meet Lauren Holman | Silversmith, creator of Solder and Stone

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Holman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factors behind my success are perseverance and willingness to collaborate with others. Working with metal is a slow process that requires much patience. Frustratingly, it is precision oriented and takes years to hone one’s skills. With much patience, you keep at it and eventually see growth. Many of the superb individuals I’ve met on this journey have generously shared their knowledge and experiences. We’ve experimented together, we’ve failed together, we’ve created together. This collaboration has kept me motivated and inspired.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Making jewelry by hand, knowing that it will bring tangible beauty to the world, invigorates me. It’s thrilling to see pieces I’ve made cherished and worn for special occasions, or an everyday heirloom accompany someone throughout their life. Solder and Stone brings purpose to my drive to create.
Some challenges along the way have been time management and wearing many hats. Often spread thin by family life and obligations, it can be difficult to dedicate the amount of time necessary to building a brand. I’m learning along the way and staying true to my personal promise to remain a lifelong learner. There is still a lot of work and growth necessary for Solder and Stone, but I believe the foundation will always be quality jewelry, hand forged using old world methods, and ethically mined stones of the earth. Each piece truly is unique and made with love. I source only the highest quality metals and transform vintage findings into modern, boho jewelry with a touch of the West. Treasures that will last a lifetime.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
People come to San Diego for its weather and beaches; therefore, it’s essential to cater to this tourist mindset. I consistently steer friends to Coronado Beach and The Henry for cocktails, to explore the Cabrillo Tidepools and eat a fish sandwich at Point Loma Seafood, stroll through LaJolla and check out The Children’s Pool – grab a taco with a view at George’s at the Cove.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Shoutout goes to the San Diego Gem and Mineral Society: Dennis Turner, David Smith, and Donna Beers.
