We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Rotter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
That more money leads to more happiness, or a better life.

I have learned that happiness is an inside job, and that we are often trading our time and energy to earn more money.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I left Wall Street, unsure about what I wanted to do next. I explored becoming a yoga teacher, and did take a yoga-teacher training and taught my friends, but felt that I shouldn’t throw away my financial market fluency and comfort with money and numbers. So I decided to become a financial advisor for women.

After working for a broker dealer and realizing that I didn’t change my life to sell products, I started my firm, True Abundance Advisors, charging a flat fee for my financial planning. I see myself as a yoga teacher for money, creating a safe space for my clients to explore their money stories, fears and dreams.

I’m drawn to people like me who wake up one day and realize that they were using their lives to make money, rather than using their money to live a purposeful life. I help them organize and clarify their financial lives and guide them to make decisions from a place of knowledge.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in a commuting suburb of New York City so I would, of course, take them to Manhattan. We’d see a show on Broadway, walk around Central Park, go window shopping in midtown Manhattan, visit the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.

So many restaurants – it depends on what kind of food they like.

We could go hear some jazz in the evening. Or a comedy club. Honestly, there is so much to do around here, it depends on what they would prefer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Robin Wald, Professional Certified Coach, Cosmic Wisdom Astrologer, Author, Yoga and Meditation Teacher, Intuitive Tarot Reader

I met Robin when I was a hard driving hedge fund partner and she was teaching yoga in my synagogue. My first reaction to her class was that it wasn’t getting my heart rate up, and I wasn’t planning to return! But her heart centered teaching, over time, made me aware that I was choosing to be a victim of my life rather than authoring my life.

Though it was a decade from the time I met her until I left Wall Street, I attribute my awakening and subsequent life choices to her teachings.
