We had the good fortune of connecting with Kush Kapila & Andrew Zorko and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kush Kapila & Andrew Zorko, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
STERLINGS Cafe (www.sterlingscafe.com) started as a brainstorming idea during COVID. We both had started mobile Businesses (www.sterlingsmobilesalon.com and http://www.executiveoilservices.com/) and were affected by the Pandemic. As our businesses were on pause we thought about how to combine both our knowledge in the mobile space and do services that we are really passionate about and we came up with STERLINGS Cafe.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our story is fairly similar but our paths are pretty unconventional. We both have a background in tech – Kush Kapila (B.Sc., M.Sc in Computer Science), Andrew Zorko (BSIE in Industrial Engineering) and met through our Business School (UCSD – Rady). What is unconventional is how we each came up with our own idea for a mobile business, Kush in the Beauty Space and Andrew in the Automotive Maintenance space which wasn’t in our field of study.
We both agree that starting a business is hard with lots of ups and downs. Some lessons we learned along the way is that there are going to be problems and that is the nature of entrepreneurship and to just role with the punches and not let it get you down. We also learned that you can plan as much as you can but things change so to be flexible and pivot as quick as possible.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start off our day at Zumbar on Roselle Street. They have the best coffee in San Diego and we use their beans for all our events. For lunch we would stop by George’s by the Cove, great view and food. Later in the evening we would head to Coronado Brewing for a nice pint.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our wives Sandhya Kapila and Kat Zorko. Stan Boyd our head of manufacturing.
