We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamerri Ater and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tamerri, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I unknowingly started my journey as a certified astrologer and reiki healer when I was an infant. My parents named me Tamerri – An ancient name for Egypt, which means Gift of the Nile. My father’s best friend conducted my naming ceremony, where he interpreted my astrological natal chart. Your natal chart is a roadmap for your life.

Tragically, when I was 13, my mother took her own life and the trauma from that experience led me to return to some of the spiritual practices from my childhood, including the complex study of astrology. I discovered my purpose as a healer and became a certified astrologer and reiki practitioner under the name AstroFashionista, all while working in the beauty industry as a product developer.

I felt that if I couldn’t help my mother, I could provide life guidance and healing to others. Through my astrology practice, Astrofashionista LLC & my career in the beauty business, I’ve been able to interact with thousands of women – majority of them millennials and more recently, Gen-Z. I’ve noticed a common thread – they want to live fulfilling lives and put a lot of focus on their love life, career and appearance. But when I’m able to dig deeper during my one on one astrology sessions, I see that most clients are searching for inner peace. They want to feel comfortable with who they are. Many of them are burned out and there’s a lot of pressure to succeed and “live their best life.”

So I decided to provide a physical product for inner beauty that they could use to promote healing, calm and relaxation, while learning more about themselves – their strengths and what they were born to do, by becoming more familiar with their astrological natal charts. This was why I created Gift of the Nile wellness.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Gift of the Nile is a luxury spiritual wellness company with a mission to inspire and create daily moments of healing and ritual through products rooted in ancient Egyptian astrology and metaphysics. The products are created and curated in harmony with the cosmos and with African-sourced ingredients to invoke a feeling of MAAT – Egyptian goddess and cultural concept of balance and harmony. Ancient cultural education is core to the brand. We want users to learn more about themselves, the purpose they were born to fulfill, and how to use our products as a practical and pleasurable tool to help them along the way.

(See first question)

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is tough….I’m a 3rd generation Angeleno and there’s so much of the city to explore.

I would try to make it the most diverse tour…picking up from the airport we would stop by Randy’s Donut’s in Inglewood, my gold standard for donuts since I was a kid and maybe even Roscoes OR Paco’s Tacos on Manchester.

We would go to a Lakers or Rams game, or BOTH. A hike a Kenneth Hahn park, where I had summer camp growing up and now live across the street from. Amazing city views.

Must-do outdoor LA shopping experience, likely at Century City.

A trip to the beach in Pacific Palisades where I went to high school.

LA dining experience at some of the popular places – Nobu, Catch LA, Mastros, Bottega Louie Weho…,you get the drift.

To my beautiful college Alma Mater campus, LMU and UCLA, where I’m currently attending Anderson Business School. (Go Bruins!)

Crenshaw/South LA where my dad grew up to see the beautiful people, culture and palm trees.

I would drive through all the LA neighborhoods to show them the different vibes from DTLA, Los Feliz, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, Mid-city, everywhere – the ultimate LA tour.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to my father, African History Scholar, Mathu Ater, for giving me the ancient name that means Gift of the Nile and encouraging me to honor Ancient Egypt in my own way, while walking in his footsteps.
