We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Vacca and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had worked exclusively in the recruiting field for Google and for several other companies since graduating from grad school and was ready for a career change. I wanted to do something that I was passionate about that would allow me to control my own schedule and have the ability to work from anywhere. I wanted the flexibility to be able to work around my daughter’s busy schedule as well.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a health and fitness influencer and my job is to promote brands on my page that align with my values and audience. I started out by selling meal plans to friends and family. My husband encouraged me to create a fitness Instagram account and I started selling my meal plans on that platform. After I gained 10,000 followers, brands started reaching out and asked me to promote their products on my Instagram page in exchange for product. As I gained more followers and experience, I was offered compensation in exchange for posting. I thought being an Instagram influencer would be easy, but it’s truly more work than it appears! I pitch brands I want to work with, negotiate terms, take photos and/or videos and edit them, research relevant hashtags, and write compelling captions. Finally, I engage with my audience and facilitate conversations around products.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live outside San Diego and it’s an amazing and beautiful place to live. I would definitely take them to La Jolla Cove beach. We would drive down the Pacific coast taking in the scenic views. I would take them to Old Town San Diego, which is the heart of California history. We would go to the biggest zoo in the United States, the San Diego Zoo, and see the pandas! We would go to Miguel’s Cocina in San Diego and get amazing Mexican food. The trip would end with a nice day at the famous Hotel Coronado!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shout out to the most loving and supportive husband, Mike who has been my photographer, videographer, editor, and true support. I also want to recognize my daughter Avianna, who has helped me navigate social media and inspired me to pursue my passion.
