We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristen, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking has not always been a strength of mine in my life. Opening my business in the height of the global pandemic, at a time of immense uncertainty, was easily the biggest risk I have ever taken. There was a moment where I had to just choose to take a chance on myself and trust that all of my experiences had led me to be at this point. I think when you know your intentions are pure and you lead with passion and hard work, the risk is worth whatever outcome it brings. I believe everyone is worthy of a big life whether that is fame and fortune, owning your own business, having a family, working for a company, traveling; whatever feels momentous and fulfilling to that person. I realized without taking risks, I wouldn’t have the big life I had dreamt of and from there, the answers were clear.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has been comprised of all things dance; performing, assisting, producing, teaching, choreographing and eventually owning my studio, The Artist Collective. I think something that sets me apart from others is I have done a bit of everything and it has allowed me to really understand many facets of this industry. I think being great at anything takes humility, consistency and willingness which are all things I have strived to embody on any job, big or small. My dad always tells me that all work is honorable and I’ve taken that with me in any space I am a part of whether it’s teaching a small class of recreational dancers or choreographing a national commercial. In my career, I would say I took the stairs not the elevator and although it hasn’t always been easy, I am proud of my persistence and commitment to my dream and my love for dance through it all.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am incredibly grateful for all the people who have supported my endeavors and been a part of my journey. In particular, my parents who gave me the gift of dance at a very young age and fostered my love for the arts my entire life. My brother and sister-in-law who always encourage me and my friends who cheer me on. The Artist Collective wouldn’t be what it is without the faculty who are also dear friends of mine and the dance families who make TAC possible. Last but certainly not least, my students who give my work meaning and purpose; they are bright lights and the heart of The Artist Collective.
