We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Goodell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
As a marriage & family therapist I preach to my client’s about having a work life balance. For years (pre marriage and kids) my life was predominantly focused on my education and building my career. To become a licensed MFT you have to go to college, grad school, complete 3,000 internship hours and pass multiple licensing tests. Its not easy and requires a lot of time and focus. My fun personal life was limited for many years but I knew the end goal was worth it. Now that I am married, with kids, I own my own private practice and only work part-time. I am lucky that I can be a stay at home mom most days but also can work for a living doing what I love. When first married I spent time working multiple jobs and studying to be licensed all in the hopes that one day I would earn the ability to have better control over my work life balance. I also married a man with the same goals and values who supported having a similar work life balance. I am currently happy with my work life balance. The only thing I hope to do more of in 2022 (post covid era) is to enjoy more of life’s outside activities that have been restricted!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
To become a LMFT is not easy, went through college, grad school, 3000+ hours of internships and multiple state licensing tests… which are not easy for someone who hates standardized tests. I stayed focused on my priorities and dedicated to my long term goal. I always knew I wanted to own my private practice so I could have the flexibility and control over my career. I am passionate about my job. I love working with adolescents / young adults and women and I feel that I connect easily with them.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Beach, any little mexican food shop, downtown Carlsbad, Safari Park, Balboa
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I couldn’t do my job without my amazing colleagues at West Coast Therapy Collective! I also have to thank my amazing husband Greg who always supports everything I do, my beautiful daughters who help teach me how to stay present and enjoy the little moments and my mom who has always inspired me to work hard and be a kind person.
