We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Harper and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, what do you attribute your success to?
Our belief that everyone should have access to luxe events, at an affordable price point. We form personal relationships with our clients and work to customize each event rental to our client’s unique budget and vision, with our specially curated collection of vintage peacock chairs, room dividers and panel backdrops, wooden signs, and items. It can take only a few key pieces to transform a space and celebrate loved ones in style!

We are “DIY,” family-oriented people, so we have really kept that client type in mind with how we have set up our company. We offer full weekend rentals (Thursday or Friday evenings, to Sunday or Monday evenings), of either a la carte rental pieces, or full setups. We quickly form personal relationships with our clients since we book all of our client setups personally, and when they pick up their pieces from us, our clients meet our son (and sometimes our dog, who is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever!). One of our favorite parts about this business is the neat people we get to meet, in a time in their lives when they are celebrating milestones. We really value those relationships and do the best we can to be as flexible as possible, because we are able to relate to those who work full time and also parent, while trying to plan a special day for a loved one too.

Beautiful events don’t have to cost an arm and a leg, because with a few key pieces, you can have a pretty, luxe setup that makes your celebration extra special. We are so happy to have found clients and a community in San Diego that value beautiful, boho event rentals, like we do!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Milestone events only come once. My parents wanted the photo of my first birthday to be at my wedding 28 years later, because the same people were at both events. There is something so powerful about throwing events that involve loved ones celebrating a special time in your life that you won’t get to have again. That’s why I am so passionate about the event industry, and how we got here today business-wise.

The business has evolved so naturally for me, starting with purchasing my first peacock chair to throw my best friend’s baby shower. It’s a personal business for me, and I treat each client like I treated my best friend. I want each client to have my very best best boho rental pieces that I have specially curated in my collection, for their special day with their loved ones. Knowing that we have been a part of so many happy memories and life milestones, brings me SO much joy and makes the hard parts worth it.

I’ve been a part of businesses that have had more challenges or that haven’t evolved so naturally, but for where we are at, so far, it has all been so organic. The lessons we have learned along the way have been centered on how to best to bring a team on board with the same passion we have put into this business, and how best to optimize our client experience and our booking system.

We’re working on putting these systems into place to better maximize time, which has been our biggest resource constraint! I have a full time job as a project manager and when I get home, it’s all about my son until bedtime! After that, I’m able to focus on answering inquiries, sourcing new pieces, working on our website, marketing, etc. Although the days are long and some days are really hard, to me that only means that you are in the right space doing the right thing! We LOVE what we do and always look forward to creating new, beautiful setups and sourcing new, one-of-a-kind pieces.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I grew up in Carlsbad, went to college in Point Loma, and live in Mission Valley now, so I have favorite spots all over this area!

I think Carlsbad is such a special place, and I would start there! I’d start with a coffee at Sleeping Tiger and a walk along the Carlsbad Sea Wall Trail, followed by a beach day at Tamarack, and then cocktails at Jeune et Jolie in downtown Carlsbad (it’s pink, so cute, and the cocktails are SO good!) We’d then go to Campfire in Carlsbad for dinner and s’mores! The s’mores are such an experience, it’s so fun to do with friends and drinks!

I’d have to include a stop in La Jolla at George’s for mimosas overlooking the water, and a peek at the seals in La Jolla Cove. Having lived here for a long time, I still like to bring my almost-two-year-old down to that area to walk around and see the seals. I’d end that day with rooftop drinks in San Diego at Vintana’s. The happy hour menu is great, and the vibe is just really beautiful and fun.

Of course, the Safari Park and San Diego Zoo are so fun to do with kids, and Fiesta Island too! It feels like San Diego has endless food, drink and activity options, and I love them all.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband is an integral part of Skye Rentals and this shoutout is dedicated to him. If you have picked up from us before, you have very likely met both my husband (and son)! He is not only our architect, builder, and fulfillment manager, he’s also the love of my life and my biggest supporter. He has always supported my hopes and dreams, since business school, where I told him I knew I could be a mom and help support the family at the same time.

With sharing those dreams and goals so early on with each other, we established that it’s important to us both to show our toddler a solid example of hard work, but also spend enough time with him and soak in every moment.

Sometimes I’ll watch our toddler for the day, and my husband will make long drives to source new, dream pieces we’ve found! Other times, after bath time, dinnertime, and bedtime, we will coordinate business details together, including plans for a warehouse for our growing collection! We want to be able to better showcase our products to our clients, and further expand our collection. We have a burgeoning kids line we are excited about, with a vintage high chair and an adorable toddler bench. I would love to be able to grow that line more.

I am so grateful for all my husband is and all he does, and love when our clients get to meet him!
