We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Hopkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, what role has risk played in your life or career?
All my life I have been taking “risks”. I do not consider myself a risktaker! Rather I am confident that what I am about to do will be successful. Believing in yourself is crucial to creating the life, love and career you desire. Being able to recognize your gut feelings and abilities takes confidence and I live my life from a place of confidence and knowing what I am capable of. Raising my son mostly on my own, starting a fitness business, being my son’s coach and manager when he was acting, being an actress myself and coaching other actors were things that just were a natural progression in my opinion. I always go into starting something, like the show I am creating, producing, writing and starring on with my partner Abigail Breslin, with the expectation that it will be a success because I know what I am doing or will learn as I go. So not really a risk to me! I either succeed or learn. Others may consider these risks, not me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Passion, persistence, positive attitude and my vulnerability are what set me apart, in my opinion.

At the moment I am so ecstatic to be co-creating, co-writing, co-producing and starring opposite my partner Abigail Breslin in our new show, The Cannibals. Although winning 32 awards in the past year for films I wrote, directed, produced and starred in was exhilarating and did validate that I must continue doing all of this!

Over the past five decades I have learned quite a few lessons about the business of show business. Some lessons have been more difficult to digest. Show business is not easy, it takes a lot of hard work and support from those around you. Being strong and confident is key to longevity for everyone, especially for women. You must be professional and know that you are part of a production that is counting on you and your talents. Be true to yourself, your ethics, morals and standards, do not take roles just to act, they must coincide with your heart.

There were several times I took a break from this work that I love so much. A few times because it got tiresome being looked at as body and not appreciated for my acting ability. Then my son started acting at a young age and I deferred to his career, he was young, a brilliant actor and had a fantastic future ahead. However, when the show he was starring on was not picked up for a 3rd season he decided he did not want to continue in the business, so back to my career it was!

I started an audition coaching business for actors/actresses, Last Minute Audition, and then an acting class, Live In The Moment Acting, which is flourishing with amazing talented people I consider family! This group is so supportive and it is a safe place for all of us. I do not teach how to act; I fine tune their work and help them get work. Veterans and disabled actors and actresses are welcome to come to the class for a month for free. I love to help others in any way I can. I am grateful for everything in my life.

Persistence and consistency win every time, particularly in this business of acting!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One must visit the Gaslamp Quarter of course! Hiking at Torrey Pines is on the agenda for at least one day. Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, La Jolla for SUP, seal watching and farmers markets or just a boardwalk stroll are favorites of mine. I love just watching the surfers at any beach! The San Diego Zoo is a full day of fun and the Safari Park is so special, especially the private tours, you get so close to the animals. Beware the giraffes though, they have long tongues! So many great restaurants to choose from but absolutely do not miss the Crown Room Brunch at Hotel del Coronado. Oh and Hash House for GIANT PANCAKES and all around incredibly delicious food!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many who have and do deserve recognition in my life. My mother and father of course, my amazing son Zack who is so supportive and loving. Richard Rush who is no longer with us, Abbie Breslin and Chris Allen are all close to my heart and their love, friendship, mentorship and support mean the world to me. And my close friends Vanita and Bill who are the best friends a girl could ask for. My life has been so blessed and I have so much to be thankful for.
