We had the good fortune of connecting with Kerry Spark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kerry, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The idea of Cinderella’s Attic originated when I witnessed so many young women not having the same opportunities that I did as a young girl. By beginning Cinderella’s Attic and focusing on the organization’s mission, “Building Confidence and Self-Esteem One Girl at a Time”, we assisted girls with the ability to attend their high school prom looking and feeling their best by providing them free formal wear for their big event. As time has progressed, fifteen years later, we have now added an annual Scholarship Fund to our programs and we are very much looking forward to seeing the success in that as well.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I decided to begin Cinderella’s Attic, I had been a full-time Special Education teacher for nine years. Initially, this gave me a leg up on connecting with the schools we worked with for our Prom Boutique, where we gave formal dresses and accessories away. This profession also helped me have more of a personal connection with the students that attended our Prom Boutique event as well. Once I made these connections with the school administration, when extending the Prom Boutique invitation, they stregnthened each year.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love having visitors, because there is so much to do in San Diego and surrounding areas. The options never get old. I do favor Poway area, because that is where my family and I have lived for the last eight years. The Bernardo Winery and Rancho Bernardo Inn are a few of our town’s highlights. The best thing, in my mind, about Southern California is that while we can take our guests to local places, there is so much more only 15-25mines away. And, all so different. You can go to Julian and enjoy their hometown feel and apple pies/cider, Temecula and indulge in local vintner’s wine, Del Mar to soak up it’s natural beauty and European charm while having fun at restaurants and shopping, downtown San Diego, hit one of the many beaches, watch a baseball game and then hit up the Top of the Hyatt to soak in one of my favorite sunset views, visit a variety of old historic Missions throughout the county, or take a day trip to the infamous San Diego Zoo, Safari Park or Sea World. The options are endless.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout definitely goes to the seven wonderful individuals that make up Cinderella’s Attic Board of Directors! Without their help and support, the organization would not be where it is today. Each of them adds something personal and special to the board and we all work well together to help the organization get better every year.
