We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenny Eng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenny, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
The most important values that I have as a performing musician that plays cover songs is to try (as much as reasonably possible) to play songs that I personally love. That has been true to who I am as an artist for as long as I can remember, and while it is not ALWAYS true, I try very hard to only introduce songs that I deeply enjoy. This, in many ways, has allowed for the longevity that I currently enjoy, and while it is not a panacea for burnout or off-days, it certainly helps to maintain a positive outlook on what you are doing and how in tune you are with your audience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I am most proud of in my journey to where I am now is the feeling that much of this path has been honest to who I am as a person and all in a desire to improve, both as a musician and performer. Of course, none of this is ever easy but with the right amount of passion and persistence, support from your community, and a little bit of naivete, I firmly believe that everyone can be successful in their own way. That may not mean superstardom, as some people who enter this line of work seek, but as long as you can be relatively realistic with your expectations, the journey can be just as rewarding as if you did become that star.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, I’m a bit of a homebody so I don’t really have anything too insightful to say about San Diego. I do love going to the San Diego Zoo to see the red pandas though. I also recommend getting California burritos and seafood burritos from a few places, and if they’re into adult beverages, checking out some interesting bars/breweries.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my Shoutout to my mom who was instrumental (no pun intended) in introducing me to music, not to mention the one who insisted that I learned to play music at an early age. Without her, I would have missed out on so many magical experiences and my life would be unrecognizable. I also want to give a shoutout to all the musicians and artists who have inspired me to want to continue to improve my own skills because they are the ones that help keep everything fresh for me.
