We had the good fortune of connecting with India Pierce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi India, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Hands down the single most important decision I have made, is to embrace the fact that I will be a lifelong learner. As business owners we often want to excel at everything we do…to be seen as an expert. We feel this pressure to be the absolute best, and while that drive often helps us achieve great success, it can also create stress and burnout. Truly understanding the boundaries of my lane has meant that I will always be a learner, and that’s okay with me because growth requires that we are constantly learning. We need to step into a space of discomfort, to own the fact that there are things that we do not know, to be a student, and open ourselves up to learning from others and asking for help when we need it. Giving myself the permission to not know and to learn from those who do has really transformed my life and my business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My work is multifaceted. I am the co-founder of Moxie Consultancy Collective, one of the few queer women of color owned and led consultancy groups that works globally to provide innovative and transformative approaches to support organizations in the creation of socially responsible, anti-racist, and equity-driven workplaces. After years of doing that work I decided that I needed to create intentional space in my life for work solely committed to joy. From that intention I created Omi Picnics.

Omi Picnics is a luxury picnic company serving San Diego and the surrounding areas. At Omi Picnics we believe time is precious and the greatest joy in life is to spend time with the people we love. That’s why our mission is to provide people with a no-stress elevated picnic experience to celebrate life’s special moments. At Omi we know two things to be true: 1) we all deserve a little luxury and 2) a life well lived should have more joy and less stress. These two truths drive our business and our commitment to our clients. They are embedded in every aspect of the company. I call my clients my ‘picnic friends,’ and from the very beginning of their interaction with Omi we deliver top-notch customer service all in the name of creating a luxurious and joyful experience for our clients. Most recently, we have launched The Picnic Circle, an online community of luxury picnic owners who come together under the common belief that community is more powerful than competition. We create online opportunities for members to network and learn together.

One of the things that makes Omi special is that this company is Black, woman, and queer owned. While my perspective shapes my business in a number of ways, one thing that I am most proud of is my commitment to “lift as I climb.” I am intentional about the vendors I use; making sure that I use my platform to provide opportunities for other women, people of color, and queer business owners.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many wonderful places in San Diego, here are some of my all time favorites: – The Hamlett in Lemon Grove

– Salud in Barrio Logan

– The Friendly, I love this place so much I could go for lunch and then again after a night on the town. Their burgers are the best I have EVER had.

– Gran Havana Cigar & Hookah Lounge, well because why not?!

– The Shout House, there’s nothing like singing loudly with random strangers

– Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill (it doesn’t hurt that the street this place sits on shares my name)

– Nachos and drinks at El Prez then take a stroll on the beach

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I was raised under the guise that “it takes a village,” a concept that has continued to be true for me, especially as it relates to my professional success. At the core of that success, is my wife who has been so supportive of my work and vision; also my mother who is always down for a good brainstorming call. Those two are the real MVPs. In addition to them, I’d like to shoutout: The San Diego Women’s Business Center, The Rising Tide Society, and all of the amazing women I’ve built community with at The Picnic Circle.
