We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Koentje the owner of NEAT Method San Diego + Orange County and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Generally speaking, I would describe myself as a risk adverse person. Probably not surprising since I am a Type-A, planner who has made professional organizing a career. That being said when it comes to business I tend to lean into risks.

Weighing risk over reward, list making is my first step in determining how much risk I am willing to take. My second step is to verbally process my options with my husband and a few close business minded friends/mentors. I try not to “spiral” too long and at the end of the day trusting my gut is often the final step. It hasn’t failed me yet.

My risk taking began when I moved out of state for College. Taking a risk often feels uncomfortable at first, the unknown can be scary. I believe that if you aren’t somewhat uncomfortable at phases of your life you are likely not reaching your full potential.

The next risk that impacted the trajectory of my life was when I relocated out West from the East Coast. I decided to call San Diego home with no job, no close friends and 3 suitcases of items! Within a month I had started a job where I met my now husband and have been here now for almost 20 years!

Beginning my career as an entrepreneur was the riskiest thing I have done and it has paid off ten-fold. I always knew I wanted to be my own boss and when the time was right for us to start my family I knew I wanted to take control of my schedule. I have trusted the process every step of the way and have established a thriving business that I am thankful to call my own.

Without risk there is no reward.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Founders and Owners of NEAT Method deserve a huge shout out- without them I would not be the proud owner of this amazing franchise!

My husband, Erik is my constant rock and supporter, his encouragement from day one of launching a business has been priceless.

I have an amazing group of girlfriends who are constantly showing up for me, understand that my schedule is endless and are always cheering me on. My mom taught me at a young age that I could do anything I worked hard at- also very thankful she passed on her gift of organization.

The biggest shout-out goes to my NEAT Method Team of Organizers- they show up daily for me and bring an elevated experience to our clients.
