We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Ganhewa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, how do you think about risk?
I believe that taking risks is a natural and necessary part of life. There are so many unknowns and each unknown requires some level of risk, in my opinion. Regardless of the outcome, there is always so much we can learn through the process of taking risks about ourselves and the world around us. My family and I moved to San Diego a little over two years ago from Virginia. In doing so, I was afforded the opportunity to choose to take a risk and begin a new career path. I have always had a passion for creativity and art. Because of our move and my willingness to take the risk, I have been able to continue my tattoo training and evolve into providing areola tattooing for breast cancer survivors and the transgender community. This has been such a positive outcome despite the risk that provides a great reward to the community and people around me! I have loved watching myself evolve through this process and seeing how it blesses those in my sphere. There is always so much to learn and embrace and my hope is that I will continue to take risks in the years to come!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a BRAC-1 gene carrier. I chose to have an elective double mastectomy with reconstruction in order to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of breast cancer. Because I have been through this process, it has given me a passion and deeper understanding of what breast cancer survivors must go through particularly in regards to the reconstruction process and feeling more physically “complete” again. I believe this fuels my ability to provide a great deal of sensitivity and care to my clients. My first priority is for them to feel seen, taken care of, and empowered to be the beautiful woman they are inside and out!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Torrey Pines hiking trails Del Mar beach
Convoy for amazing pho, ramen and boba
Oceanside Pier for a little fishing and roller skating
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shout out to Casey White with C.W. Cosmetic Tattooing for taking the time to train me and encourage me in my areola tattooing!
