We had the good fortune of connecting with Katherine Eye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katherine, what are you inspired by?
I am infatuated with the ecosystems of the CA Eastern Sierra, Yellowstone and Grand Teton. The color palette of these places creatively fuels me-the soft warm green of sagebrush, the cotton candy skies during blue hour, the bright white of the snow when it sparkles in the sunlight, and the turquoise blue waters. The textures of these places inspire me from the texture of old wood on the buildings in Bodie State Park + Mormon Row to the jagged mountain peaks in Mammoth Lakes + Grand Teton. I am fond of bison, pronghorn, mule deer, moose, coyotes + sage grouse. I admire (yet have immense respect for) grizzly bears, black bears + mountain lions. The conservation of these wild places and the wildlife that inhabits them get me out of bed every morning. I enjoy sharing these places with people through photography whether it be through adventuring with couples as I document their love or photographing wildlife and landscapes.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets my photography apart is my attention to detail. Since my photography journey started by niching in wildlife and landscapes, I make it a point to capture the landscape just as beautifully as my subject. While I want the focus to be on my subject, I don’t want any details in the image getting lost. When my couples and I are exploring for adventure sessions or elopements, I also try to artistically incorporate any wildlife we come across into the images.

Taking the leap to run a small business full time was terrifying and creatively liberating at the same time. I love photography with my entire being and am constantly evolving and challenging myself to learn something new. My genuine love of people and hustle have gotten me to where I am today. There is a lot of work that goes unseen when running a small business but ultimately, the work behind the scenes is what sets a business up for success. I’ve learned that it is easy to look at a successful person and forget that they too started somewhere and had to build their business from the ground up. The sky truly is the limit when you wholeheartedly believe in your why and have a strong support team in place.

There is so much that goes into a brand beyond graphics, fonts and color palettes. I believe that the way we make people feel is what makes a brand. One of the main reasons I love photographing couples is cultivating a relationship with my clients and authentically documenting their story. At the end of the day, I hope that my clients feel loved, seen and respected. Knowing my clients feel valued is how I measure success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
While I’m not as familiar with the hot spots in SoCal, around 80% of the visitors here in Mammoth Lakes are from the SoCal area.

There are a lot of incredible restaurants in Mammoth Lakes. Some of my favorites include The Warming Hut for breakfast and Bleu Market and Kitchen for Dinner. If you’re a coffee addict like me, Looney Bean Coffee has a killer latte. Last but definitely not least, Roberto’s Cafe has a stellar margarita.

There are a lot of things to do in Mammoth Lakes if you enjoy recreating. During the winter, the skiing and snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain is next level. I highly suggest visiting during the spring and summer if you enjoy hiking and recreating. The hiking trails are endless and there are a lot of hot springs to choose from when you are ready to relax after a busy day of exploring. There are plenty of pack stations that offer horseback rides and the fly fishing opportunities are endless.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m extremely close to both of my parents and they have constantly supported me on every journey I’ve taken in life. While I’m close to both of my parents, I’ve always had a special bond with my dad. In June of 2020, my dad was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS). Seeing my Dad’s life take a drastic 360 degree turn made me realize how short life is and how important it is to live a life where we pursue what we are truly passionate about.

I was always the person with a camera in hand. I purchased my first DSLR camera while in college so that I could document my backpacking adventures and photograph wildlife. While in college, I spent a lot of time taking senior pictures and photographing proposals. My heart felt so full when I received feedback from clients saying that they loved their images and felt truly seen and beautiful. I quickly learned that I enjoyed formulating a relationship with clients and authentically documenting their story. In December of 2020, I had the opportunity to photograph my sister-in-law’s proposal. That moment was the first time I felt pure joy since my dad’s diagnosis. There were so many little “signs” throughout the day that made me wonder why on earth I wasn’t pursuing my passion for photography full time. My wonderful husband, Kaleb saw how I lit up with a camera in my hand and took me straight to the city office to get a business license the next day. It was his belief in me that liberated me and allowed me to jump head first into business. He is incredibly wise when it comes to business so he is constantly my rock through it all.
