We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Carr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from Herndon, VA- a suburb of Washington DC. I grew up with an older sister, Julia, my dad, worked for the FBI as a special agent and my mom was a stay at home mom, always around for my dance competitions as a young girl. My parents always told me to follow my dreams and to do whatever my heart desired. As a college student and wanting to see the world, they encouraged me to study abroad to Australia when I brought it up to them (nervously). When I wanted to travel more in my early 20s, instead of tying myself down with a 9-5/office job, they encouraged it then, too. I eventually made my way out to Southern California and although they didn’t love that I was living across the country from them, they always supported me and my vision for making a life out this way. I think because my parents were so supportive of me from a very young age, that gave me the strength and perseverance to really chase my dreams as an adult. I didn’t realize that photography was my calling, until about 2 years ago. Once I officially began my own business and really diving deep into it, I realized this void in my life had been fulfilled and it highlighted how passionate I was for this line of work. I owe both my parents so much for always encouraging me and for giving me the foundation and tools I needed, at a young age, to guide me on this amazing career path I have created for myself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My photography style is light, joyful and happy! I get to take photographs of people and make them feel their most beautiful, authentic selves, in the best lighting possible. I believe my carefree and warm demeanor towards my clients, and the joy I get in taking these photos, sets me apart from others. There is nothing that makes me happier than getting those text messages from my clients saying how happy they are with their photo galleries. It’s the best feeling in the world!
A big part of where I am today is because of Nicole Hill, the founder of Horizon Found & successful fashion photographer, who created the perfect guidebook called The Photographer’s Path- for beginner and advanced photographers alike. This coursework catapulted me from a somewhat beginner photographer to a successful lifestyle photographer who owns my own business and who books regular gigs around town. I learned the ins & outs of beginning my business the right way, all the way to building my website and of course the fundamentals of photography. The supportive community is enough to make you want to fly across the country and meet your new photography besties- who are always there in an instant with any burning questions you may have.
The journey has not been all easy- finding balance in the every day, while trying to work with 3 kids at home is not for the faint of heart. I have realized though, that if you’re determined enough to do it, you will make time for it. Whether it’s waking up super early before your kids get up, or staying up after they go to bed to get your client gallery done- you are capable of doing what you need to! When your job doesn’t feel like a job, that is the most rewarding feeling. I love what I do and I believe that reflects in my photography.
I have learned that you have to put yourself out there a lot, and even though it is scary at times, the growth that happens because of that, is worth it every time.
I want the world to know how passionate I am about my craft. I am constantly growing and changing in this industry and it is so inspiring to see fellow photographer friends doing the same. I am currently growing my brand side of the business and am so excited to conceptualize and produce amazing content with my clients this year. I love being creative and trying new trends & believe I am very adaptable in whatever type of shoot comes my way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
After waking up, we would take a nice stroll down to the beach by South Carlsbad State Campground. Smell the ocean air and maybe go for a dip in the ocean, if it’s hot enough. Come back to change into some proper brunch attire and head over to Herb & Sea in Encinitas for delicious food & drinks. They have the best Bloody Mary’s in town- you will not regret getting one (they make their own mixture the bartender tells me!) After brunch, we would check out a few shops down the 101. A few of my favorites- Vuori, Brixton, Salt Culture and Blackbook bikini. A trip to Encinitas wouldn’t be complete without a stop off at the beach to chill for a bit. Moonlight beach is always a favorite & offers concessions and bathrooms/showers. For a pre dinner drink, Vaga at the Alli Marea hotel has insane views & chairs to sit on overlooking the Pacific and the Lagoon. Dinner at Nick’s in Carlsbad Village is always delicious. They have amazing cocktails and everything I have tried on their menu is mouth watering! It also has a nice, upscale beach vibe- not too pretentious, and very warm & welcoming.
The next day, we could have a coffee and breakfast at Mrkt Space in Leucadia. The cutest little cafe/shop that recently opened. Then, we could have a day at the La Costa Resort, Spa where we would get massages and enjoy the insanely nice pool area for spa guests only- also providing service to your pool lounger to grab a drink/food and relax some more! Dinner later would be Valentina- a charming little restaurant in the heart of Leucadia. They have delicious wine, seafood, and pizzas.
Another notable place to check out for happy hour is The Campstore- located in the South Carlsbad State campground. They have the kindest owners and they have really put their heart & soul into the place over the last 1.5 years. You can bike there or if that’s not an option, you can park across the bridge at the Ralphs Shopping center and its a short walk over. They always have great live music and they serve delicious drinks, pizzas, wings and even offer salads. It’s a favorite local spot and has a very fun, chill beach vibe.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My hubby- Martin and my kids- Ellie, Zach and Mia. Without their love, support and encouragement, I wouldn’t have been able to properly do this amazing job of mine as a photographer. My family is always lifting me up and supporting me on this journey every step of the way. Since they believe in me, it’s 100% easier to believe in myself. If I ever need a pick me up, I know who to turn to-my oldest daughter, Ellie, who is wise beyond her years and the sweetest person to be around!
