We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Petersen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karen, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for your children?
I have 2 college age boys and when I started my business they were in preschool. In fact, I met my business partner because her children were at the same preschool. Early on we realized that our business Skoy Enterprises (a small Eco friendly company that sells household sinkware items) would have a huge impact on our children for different reasons. The first reason was watching our children start thinking about the earth in a different way. They started noticing that we no longer used as much paper towel and that we made different choices with how we purchased household items. We began choosing natural products as much as possible. Our children (my business partners and mine) will always opt to grab a Skoy cloth versus a paper towel. They try to live as environmentally friendly as possible. I do not see that as much with their peers. The second reason or impact that I would say is the pride they feel that I have a successful small business. My 18 year old told me that he knows that if he starts his own business he can always come to me for advice. That makes me feel great.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business is Skoy Enterprises, LLC. We are a small women owned business that manufactures and sells Eco Friendly household products to retailers and on Amazon. We have 4 main products in our line. Skoy Cloth, Skoy Scrub, Skoy Towel and Skoy holder. We have been in business for 12 years and have learnt all the things it takes to become a successful small business. We work hard and play hard. We do not take life too seriously but we do care passionately about our products and the fact that they are better for the environment than other similar products. We have learnt not to give up and most importantly for our business and friendship we have learnt honesty and compromise.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was coming to the city I would take them Hiking at Torrey pines reserve. Sundowners and dinner at Pacific coast grill. I would take them for a stroll along the 101 in Encinitas. Dinner at Dija Mara in Oceanside would be in the cards for sure. We would hike to potato chip rock and stop for a beer at Viewpoint in Del Mar before heading to the Belly up in Solana beach to catch a great band. Long walks on the beach between moonlight and beacons would be on the itinerary too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out to the husbands behind the Skoy team. Michelle’s husband Patrik has been a very solid mentor for us. He is a work horse who is always willing to go above and beyond to help guide us. My husband Ed has always been an encouraging force. He always has little pearls of wisdom for me and he believes that I can do anything I set my mind to. He comes from a family that had a family business so he is good at recognizing that if I need his advice I will ask otherwise he just lets me be.
