We had the good fortune of connecting with June Freedom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi June, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want people to remember me for being true to myself, for not following the trends and for creating my own path. Since I was a child, it was my dream to introduce the Cape Verdean culture to the main stream world. Not just the music, but the food and the beauty of visiting my country as well, this will be my legacy!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is not just my music, my cooking is my art as well. Right now I’m extremely excited about my next EP ‘Anchor Baby’ being released via my own record label Flight Club Music Group in partnership with Empire Africa and the opening of my restaurant ‘Cape Green’ which will be the first Cape Verdean restaurant in Los Angeles. We will be opening this February starting with delivery-only until the pandemic allows for indoor dining. It has definitely been a long and hard road to get to where I am today, but I have had the most amazing support and encouragement through all the ups and downs. I want the world to know that nothing can be done alone, so make sure you take care of those that take care of you!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting me in California for a week, one of the first things I would do is bring him for a drive through the Santa Monica Mountains to the Malibu beaches. I would also show him some of my favorites dispensaries including Cookies in West Hollywood and Atrium and Mother Natures Remedy in Woodland Hills. We would definitely have to hang at the recording studio so he can see me work in action, visit the Cape Green kitchen and do some shopping at the Melrose Trading Post in WEHO.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My life partner is also my business partner and has been my number one support through the last 12 years of my career. Theres no shout out in the world that can represent the rock she has been and the ambition she has to help build the FREEDOM legacy together.
