We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Pullman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Just a little bit about me, I am a certified Holistic Health Coach and Personal Trainer with a specialty in youth physical activity. As a mom of two teen girls, I am deeply familiar with the challenges teenagers (and their parents) face every day. I’m also keenly aware how little support there is for them outside the home. This is where my passion to help teach kids habits to care for their bodies and minds began. I believe the journey to health and wellness can be enjoyable with the right mindset, ideas, and opportunities, and my goal is to help teens find these. Kids aren’t born worrying about their weight; this is a learned behavior that has been brought on through media, visual platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat, parental example, peers, and more. Let’s face it, we live in an appearance-oriented world, and all teens, regardless of their gender, are affected by these unrealistic demands society places on them. As a confident, healthy adult, I have fallen prey all too often to these unrealistic standards of beauty that aren’t obtainable for the average person. So as my daughters began to grow, I focused on keeping them active and teaching them a good understanding of how to live a balanced life. But let’s be honest, teens don’t always want to listen to their parents. We can cook healthy meals and encourage them to live a healthy life, but we aren’t around to watch their every move… and then what?
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As I began my career in Health and Fitness, I wasn’t immediately sure what direction I wanted to take within the wellness industry. As time went on and as my children got older and I started seeing the struggles teens face every day, the answer became clear to me: I needed to work with teens! Being a teen in this day and age is far from easy. I started Rise Wellness to give teenagers information and inspiration tailored uniquely to them and their lives. The key to establishing lasting health changes is forming the right habits. That’s why I work hands-on with my teen clients to help them naturally adjust to making smarter food choices they find compelling, finding activities they enjoy, caring for themselves during stressful times, blocking out social media noise, and so much more. My goal is that health and wellness become a part of their lives that they will stick with, and most importantly, enjoy throughout their lives.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
O gosh, I grew up in San Diego and still discover new amazing places in this beautiful city all the time. I currently live in North County so I don’t tend to get out of my bubble all that often or rather I choose not to leave my bubble all that often because I love it so much! If I had a friend in town, I would take her on a walk along the beach starting at Cardiff Reed and head South towards Solana Beach. We would walk down to Fletcher Cover and up over the 101 to Clair’s Café. We would sit and enjoy a delicious breakfast out on their adorable back patio before walking down to Cedros to check out the shops. After cruising around Cedros for a bit we would walk back home via the lagoon route for a change of scenery. If my friend was a bit more on the adventurous side, we would head out to Lake Hodges for a few hour mountain bike ride then treat ourselves to a margarita at Hernandez Hideway before heading back home. Once home and showered we would ride ebikes to downtown Encinitas where we would spend the rest of the day shopping and eating at one of the amazing little restaurants down there.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband has been incredibly supportive of me finally figuring out what I want to do when I grow up and helping me pursue that passion. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his love and support. My two beautiful daughters have taught me to push through my self-doubt and not to accept anything less than what I deserve.
