We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have always wanted to live a big, beautiful life full of adventure and I think taking risks is essential to an adventurous life. It takes a lot of blind faith to leap and wait for the net to appear but in my opinion, it’s always worth it. By taking the risk of opening my own small business, I have learned a lot about myself and what I can accomplish, as well as just how hard you have to work to be self employed. I began my adult life in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado after having moved from Chicagoland, a risk in itself as I’d never even visited before. This move eventually led me to finding silversmithing. I have since brought my business to the Atlantic Coast of Melbourne, Florida to experience the ocean. I never stop searching for the next risk, the next opportunity to take myself and my art to the next level.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always been heavily inspired by music, folk art, nature’s landscapes and mid century style. I try to combine all of these things to make jewelry you’ve never seen before. This is quite a challenge with the saturation of the industry but, it’s always my intention. I love making pieces that feel balanced and fun to wear yet elegant and stylish. Statement pieces are where my creativity shines, there are no rules in jewelry making and I love that! Finding this style has taken time and having only been doing this for two years, is ever evolving. Many days in my studio are a challenge but I find my flow and just keep working! I’d like my brand to emit originality, embrace individuality and give anyone who purchases my work the feeling and power of confidence and style.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am brand new to Melbourne, Florida. My boyfriend and I made the move to experience something different from our life in Colorado – which I consider home! It’s been a very different change of pace and activities! I spend a lot of days at the beach, living in my bathing suit now searching for shells, constantly covered in sand. My dog, Kajmir, loves to run and play in the waves. Our favorite spot for some fuel is Cafe Surfinista located in Indialantic, FL. Their smoothie bowls are delish and perfect after a day in the sun and water. I also love to thrift and head to the flea market on Saturday mornings. Evenings here are perfect for sunset motorcycle rides and skating the bowl at the park. Whenever I’m not in my studio, I’m usually outside!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest supporter is my mom. Without her, I would have never had the encouragement to dive into the world of jewelry making. She passed her love of jewels and art down to me and has always supported me in my decisions as an artist. I’d also like to shoutout the entire silversmithing community on Instagram. It’s wild how many people you can reach and build relationships with all over the world, nowadays. It makes the earth feel small in a very comforting way.
