We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Hazelaar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseph, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
That I am willing to act on my intuition. Most people have tons of great idea, businesses or directions they should travel but most never act on them. Either they are to scared about failure or the talk themselves out if it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Raised in Alaska, AirForce Veteran and Alaska State Trooper for 15 years. Moved to Virginia to work for government Agencies that were in the fight against terrorism and spent a majority of the next 6 years all over the world. What that gave me a was a broader perspective of people, culture and leadership styles. Those experiences really shaped my leadership style and way I run my businesses today. I have learned that kindness always wins with employees and that my biggest obstacles are usually me getting out of the way of me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have the best place to come visit in Williamsburg VA. First Stop Colonial Williamsburg where the first capital of America was founded. Walk on cobble stone streets and interact with Colonial actors throughout the day in a total emersian of colonial times. Day 2 do the same at Jamestown settlement and day three at York Town where you walk the halls of our founding fathers and read the words that created our nation today. I wish it was required by students. Day 4 and 5 I would spend a day at each water country and Bush Gardens.
Day 6 I would tour Thomas Jeffersons estate and pick apples on his rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Finish the trip at our nations capital in Washington DC.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Jessica. Let me tell you how important a spouse is in your success or failure of being a Husband, Father, leader and or business owner. Show me a successful person in life and I will show you a equal partner behind the scenes making it happen.
