We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill Laing and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jill, what are you inspired by?
Nature and other entrepreneurs inspire me. Nature allows me to tune into my inner voice in the midst of the breeze rustling through leaves, birds chirping, and waves crashing. Nature provides a peace within that settles me. My most creative and spiritual journeys have been amidst nature. I am also inspired by other fiery entrepreneurs who share their struggles, wins, and how-to’s. I tend to get lost in my own self-doubt and hearing how other folks tackle problems, organize their schedules, and keep pushing themselves forward motivates me to keep on living my own journey.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a paranormal romance writer, I set myself apart from other writers in that I focus on intercultural relationships. I am also empathetic, which helps me tune into people’s emotions. With these gifts, I believe I am able to write more authentic dialogue. I am known for my optimism and interest in helping other people develop their own career paths.

It was not easy for me to share the creative aspect of my persona with others. I was too concerned about what others would think but more so I doubted myself. But what I have learned by embracing this part of my journey is that I am allowing myself to further grow and develop as a person and learn new things, and I am exceeding my own expectations.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever someone comes to visit, I usually take them to the La Jolla Cove, Cali Cream, Stone Brewing, and Carlsbad Village. At the La Jolla Cove, you can find a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean and get up close and personal with sea lions. There are amazing restaurants and art galleries in the surrounding vicinity. Cali Cream is a local homemade ice cream shop in Encinitas. What’s special about this place is that it’s owned by a Cal State San Marcos alumna, and they make fantastic treats! Stone Brewing is a local favorite with some of the best IPAs in town. Of course, you can purchase this beer in just about any store these days, but they have two beautiful beer garden locations in SoCal—where it all began. And finally, strolling around Carlsbad Village allows folks a chance to experience that chill California vibe while watching surfers or walking along the serene coast. There are a variety of local restaurants and businesses including rock shops and yoga studios.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have had amazing mentors throughout my career, but the people who still to this day give me the courage to move forward without doubting myself are my parents. They have always believed I could do anything and never put any boundaries on the success I was capable of achieving. More recently, I have been motivated and encouraged to pursue my writing career with the help of two local coaches. Analia Mendez, owner of Signature Careers, continues to be a source of encouragement as I pursue my entrepreneurial endeavors. She has a wide-range of services she offers to those in career transition and is rooted in a strengths-based approach. Pam Reyes, founder of Living Out Loud Coaching & Consulting, is another stellar coach who really helped me to look at myself and professional ambitions holistically. This allowed me to gain the courage to plan for a career transition and actually make it happen. She has a mental fitness and strengths-based approach to her coaching.
