We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Brixie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business has changed a number of times as my business has evolved but I think the outstanding idea has always been to have a business that provides me the opportunity to be with my family while being able to provide for them as well. I was initially driven to become a permanent makeup artist because I’ve had a lifelong desire to work within the beauty industry. It has become something I hold very dear to my heart and would love to do it for as long as I can. I don’t really remember realizing that I was starting my own business when I began but I do know once I moved to California in the beginning of 2022, I had to make the choice of whether I would carry on that business, here. In making this decision, I knew working for myself would provide me the ability to allocate my time to all of the people and things that matter to me while still challenging my professional career to grow.

What should our readers know about your business?
Brixie Beauty Bar is the product of a dream I’ve had for a very long time – to help others wake up feeling like their most confident selves. I am a permanent makeup artist, currently specializing in semi-permanent eyebrow tattoos. Working in a makeup related industry has been my dream since I was 11. I was diagnosed with severe scoliosis in middle school, having to have corrective surgery a few years later. This struggle isolated me from my peers and sparked a number of confidence issues for myself, being a very impressionable age with a visible condition that most kids do not understand at that time. Makeup became a healthy escape for me and I pursued it in many ways – creating YouTube videos, doing makeup on friends, to later on working for a wedding/event hair and makeup company and even free-lancing on the side.

Through this journey, I found my trainers, took their class on microblading and powder brows and developed an entirely new passion. This profession was not an easy one to learn and I spent a lot of time very nervous about working on clients. The service is a semi-permanent tattoo on the client’s face so you can imagine – the stakes are pretty high. But with the guidance of my mentors and continual positive responses from clients, I’ve come to understand that I am in the right industry. This service is life changing for clients and every single one has a different story as to why they’ve come through my door. It’s not just cosmetic – it creates confidence. Each time, I get to see clients smile at themselves on the mirror on their way out – that is why I do what I do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A food tour through Little Italy, a solid beach day in Pacific Beach, and a stroll through the Ocean Beach farmers market!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is a long list of people I could thank for the success of my business. Being a service provider, each and every client that walks through my door is a huge part of my story. The support from my family has been huge. My boyfriend has dedicated many late hours to helping me physically put together my work space, talk about business ideas, and encouraging me to follow my dream. A really big thank you has to go to my mentor, friend, and the woman who trained me in my profession. She is a huge part of why I kept my business running when things got tough. Her words of encouragement are a large part of where I am today.
