We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Susan Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer Susan, how does your business help the community?
During the pandemic, when I was unable to go to concerts or get together with friends, I found that walking and hiking in nature took on a greater significance for me. I have always loved the outdoors, but now it was more: the trees against the skyline, the outdoor air, and, most importantly, the sights and sounds of the birds above my head. Nature was literally helping me keep my head up despite all the negativity in the news. It was at this time, while being swept up in nature, that I finally joined our local chapter of the Audubon society and enjoyed a bird walk event they put on. I was also looking to do some charity work after being inspired by a benefit concert my fifteen year-old daughter had been a part of. She and her band raised a little over three thousand dollars for Food Share and it had made us all light up inside. My love of birds and my desire to give combined for me one day when I had a great idea: I’d create three owl works (owls are my favorite!) that when sold, would benefit a local raptor rehab center. I also wanted the owls (that I chose to represent) to be threatened or endangered species, so I chose the great gray owl, the elf owl, and the spotted owl. Two of the three are lighted jewelry mosaics, and the third will be an assemblage piece. The first piece, Elf Owl, already sold, and I’m hopeful that the other two will as well. Upon completion of the third and final sale, I will make a significant donation to the Ojai Raptor Center. I’m very excited about this project!

My art is unique in that is is designed to slow the viewer down, to transport them to another world by evoking feelings of wonder. Ever go beach-combing and find a couple beautiful pieces of sea glass? Or have you found sap from a tree that looks like crystal? These are the things I like to use in my artwork. The elements of nature that are indicative of something mysterious, something that transcends the natural beauty of the object itself. I also use sparkling costume jewelry that reminds me of my childhood, when I’d dress up like a “rich lady” or stare with wonder at the contents of my mom’s jewelry box. Anything that kindles nostalgia is fair game for my artwork, and this includes pages of old children’s picture books that I get at used book sales, and vintage toys and miniatures. I love to combine all of the aforementioned elements to create assemblages in shadow boxes that can tell a different story to each person gazing into it.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Greg Jones, for working hard as the bread winner for the family, and being the most amazing handyman, animal-lover, and patient board game player EVER! He has a big birthday coming up in December, and I want him to know how much I love him and appreciate all that he does for me, my mom, and our two daughters. I love you Greg!
