Meet Jennifer Burton and Christine Marland | Hosts of the Nopeville Podcast

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Burton and Christine Marland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer and Christine, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of Nopeville we think lies in our attention to detail when we make our podcast episodes. We spend hours researching each topic to make sure we can present as much accurate information as possible and try to include different and unique takes on the subject matter. We also try to come up with methods of immersion in specific topics to captivate our audience, or “Tourists” as we like to call them, on whatever tour they happen to be taking. That could include specific sound effects to make it seem like what you’re “touring” is really present, or changing up the narration and music. We don’t call ourselves podcast hosts, we’ve created a self-contained, fictional universe that is the city of Nopeville and we act as Tour Guides taking you on tours to see the scary and terrifying things that make you say NOPE!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets us apart is we bring a unique spin to our podcast, so it’s not a typical structure. We’ve created the fictional city of Nopeville where all of things that make you say NOPE reside. We take our “tourists” (listeners) on tours throughout the city as their Tour Guides.
We are most excited about our upcoming endeavors and tangential directions we can take our podcast. For instance, we have created a new segment called “Campfire Stories: Haunting Hour” where we interview paranormal investigators about their investigations and pick their brains for advice since we would like to do our own paranormal investigations as well.
We got to where we are today by the support of our listeners, friends, family, and a great supportive community of indie podcasters. We try to stick to a posting schedule for our episode releases, but since we put so much care and effort into each and every one of our episodes, sometimes our time has to be divided into personal life, our day jobs, and our podcast efforts. Because of this, sometimes the podcast has to be put on the back-burner, much to our dismay. This hasn’t been easy for us since we do want to have a more regular podcasting schedule, and we haven’t quite found a way to overcome this challenge yet.
We’ve learned better researching techniques to streamline our note-taking as well as developed our brand for our style of narrating and writing for smooth recording sessions. We’ve also learned different editing and audio techniques so our audio quality has improved since the start of our podcast. We learned which days to post our new episodes to improve listenership as well as what platforms to make the episodes available on. We also had to retrain our normal speaking patterns such as consciously and actively avoiding the “uhs” and “umms” we had to frequently edit out in our early episodes.
What we would like people to know about us is that we put a tremendous amount of effort into every episode. We want to do our best to provide detailed information about the topics because they are genuinely things we are interested in as well. We’d like to use our platform to create an open and safe space for our listeners to engage with us and each other and hopefully build a supportive community where we can do more outreach work. We have many projects on the drawing board, and hope people look forward to more of what Nopeville can offer.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being a paranormal podcast, the first thing we like to tell people about is the Whaley House in Old Town San Diego. The place has such rich history and paranormal encounters. And while you’re there, check out the Cosmopolitan Hotel and immerse yourself in San Diego in the 1800s. Other spots would include Balboa Park and the museums it has to offer. Simply walking around the area, you will be amazed by the amazing architecture and greenery, but places like the Natural History Museum, San Diego Zoo, and the Old Globe Theater are spots that should be on your bucket list. Of course, no trip to San Diego is complete without a stop at one of its fantastic beaches. La Jolla and Coronado Island are a few of our favorites, but also Belmont Park is a fun, family friendly area on the boardwalk with arcades, rides, and food. Obviously, Gaslamp has great nightlife with a plethora of bars and restaurants you can go to. A week might not be long enough to hit all the good food places!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, we’d like to shoutout our very supportive group of indie podcasters that we’ve made friends with along our journey. A few of these podcasts include Paige from Reverie True Crime, Brad from Killin’ Missin’ Hidden, and Greg from Indie Drop-In who have all helped get the word out on our podcast in some way and have fully inspired and encouraged us to keep going. Next, we’d like to shoutout some of our fans who have been with us since the beginning and still engage and support us today. One particular fan started out sending in fictional stories he wrote for our “Campfire Stories” segment, and he has been our biggest supporter. Lastly, we’d like to shoutout our friends and family. We both have friends who have helped share our podcast by word of mouth. Our family has witnessed our sleepless nights of tirelessly researching, writing, recording, and editing so we can produce a quality show. Christine’s cousin and partner at We Dream of Travel Photography have given us start-up business and social media advice to help us enhance our presence. Jen’s husband has lent his voice to the podcast in many episodes as well as listening to every single episode when it comes out and provides constructive feedback as an avid podcast listener himself. Our success wouldn’t be what it is without all of these wonderful people in our lives.
