We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, how do you think about risk?
In my opinion, people are born with a certain risk tolerance that can only be slightly modified. Personally, I have always been a risk taker. I take chances that others probably wouldn’t. On a DISC scale, which measures dimensions of your personality, my C ( risk tolerance) is  currently a 7 out of 100. That is pretty low, meaning I am not risk adverse! I enjoy sharing stories about the risks I have taken and the payoffs that ensued, especially to young entrepreneurs who can hopefully learn from both the mistakes I have made and the successes I have experienced. I’ve now started two companies at 41 years of age and both of them required me to take some substantial risk. The good thing is that both ventures turned out enormously successful and I am blessed to own 100% of company #2!

What should our readers know about your business?

Optima is full of kind-hearted, intelligent and caring people who help to move our clients busineses forward with good numbers and solid advice.

I have always taken a ton of pride in my slogan Happy Staff=Happy Clients. This is important to me because having high retention and happy employees who take good care of the clients we service is paramount in this industry. This is why our vision is to have the highest retention in the industry. Being a great place to work is incredibly important to me.

I have faced many challenges as a female in a male dominated industry, but everything I have been through has helped me get to where I am. I have 70 amazing employees and own 100% of my own company, which continues to grow at a steady pace. None of this has been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Everything that I have accomplished has been far worth the risks I have taken. There have been so many things I have learned, and I continue to learn things all the time. I consider myself a work in progress.

A few quick lessons- be careful what you put in writing, never give away equity unless absolutely necessary and don’t assume people will be good. Being too trusting can hurt you. Be optimistically cautious.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A typical tourist day for me would be to pick someone up from the airport and go to seaport village. Next, we would have brunch on the water, or somewhere with a view like C-Level or Coasterra. We would drop luggage off at my house near La Jolla and then go to the beach or a hike. My favorite beaches being La Jolla shores or Torrey Pines. Eating at Tonys Jacal, Red Tractons or the Brigantine Del Mar would be in my top 3. Ending the day with a sunset is my favorite.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband has been the rock by my side for the last 12 plus years. He has been with me in the toughest of times, and always supported me. When I was incredibly sick 11 years ago, I don’t think I would have made it through without him. When I had a hostile takeover of my first company by my ex partners, he allowed me to use most of our life savings to start a second company. I was able to hire 40 employees in 90 days and get back on my feet quickly. We fought through a tremendous litigation, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in a year’s time, but prevailed. He is my best friend, I appreciate the relationship we have and the life we have built together. Now, lets just hope we can get through our house remodel!
