We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennie Boone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always have loved the idea of being my own boss. As a kid, and to this day, my entire family calls me “boss” so the urge to be a leader was always appealing. I liked the idea of motivating myself, working from anywhere I choose to, and having complete creative control over what I was doing- but, I didn’t know what my business would be!
For quite sometime I had a running list of different things that interested me, but nothing seemed like the thing. Finally, I was working in home with a family, and saw how lack of sleep and routine around bedtime really impacted the kids and parents a like. They were all exhausted, and bedtime was a major pain point. I remember thinking- I know how to fix this. After researching, I realized there were a ton of resources for infant sleep, but no one talked about toddler and primary aged children’s sleep. So, I created my company- Tiny Duck Parenting and the Week to Sleep program.
I have found a way to be my own boss, while helping others and making a difference in the world around me, which is exactly what I was hoping I could find in a career. I have a sense of freedom and excitement as I reach milestones, and have loved the process of starting and building my business.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business came out of a love for the performing arts. I realized to be a professional musical theatre actor, I needed to have some sort of “side- job” that paid the bills, so I could be free to take work and performance opportunities. I realized that there weren’t people coaching sleep training for toddlers and primary aged children, and I knew I could help. As I began growing my business, I realized it felt really creatively fulfilling like performing did, but gave balance and peace of mind having more control over my day to day life. Finding that balance in being creatively fulfilled while also feeling grounded and in control is something I had not experienced before.
I am really excited about my upcoming launch of the virtual Week to Sleep program. I have created a video module course that parents will be able to stream and learn how to sleep train their toddler. I am really looking forward to being able to provide a cost effective way to help many families end the struggle that exists around bedtime and sleep. I want families to be able to use that time to connect and create positive memories with their child, not memories of dread and struggle!
I have learned so much along the way that has impacted my company. So far, I am a one woman show- I hope to grow and have multiple people helping grow this vision. I know as my business grows, I will have a lot to learn. I hope people see how much I genuinely value helping others, and making a difference in their lives. I love what I do because there is nothing better than the feeling of hearing a family thank me for giving them their lives back.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I grew up sailing in Newport Harbor, so I would likely rent a duffy and take them on a harbor cruise. I love grabbing a bottle of wine and some cheese and crackers and seeing Orange County from a different perspective.
From there, I would likely take them to my favorite little sushi restaurant Buddah’s Favorite or to Bear Flag Fish Co. We would then get some frozen bananas at Dad’s on Balboa Island, followed by drinks at CdM Restaurant. The following day would be spent grabbing donuts at Sidecar, then day drinking at Mutt Lynch’s and enjoying the beach!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Sarah Saltzberg deserves a shout out! She is co-owner of Bohemia Realty Group, a boutique and independently owned real estate firm of 100+ agents that services the NYC area. I worked as her nanny while I was pursuing a career in musical theatre and got to witness her work and maintain a really meaningful life each day. She found time to be there for her two incredible sons, be a supportive partner to her spouse, spend time with friends, make an impact on the community around her, and feed her creative spirit. She really showed me that being your own boss was possible, and can lead to incredible success. She has supported me each step of the way, and always finds time to mentor those around her trying to build and grow their own company.
This is a woman who showed me it is possible to have it all. She co-built this incredible real estate company from the ground-up all while maintaining her creative endeavors in the arts.
Sarah is inspiring, a cheerleader for all, and always supporting those around her anyway she can. I am so grateful to have her in my corner!
